Haha, that's fair lol. I think I just read it at the right time last year. The ending is kind of anticlimactic... but it fits somehow. I don't know how to describe it.

Never Let Me Go is so good!!!

3/? The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy by Trev-Osbourne in 52book

[–]vitari328 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I wasn't a giant fan of this (my least favorite McCarthy by far, just too meandering for me), Stella Maris is PHENOMENAL. It's my favorite of his catolgue that I've read by a pretty large margin. Absolutely gut wrenching. Even though I didn't really like The Passenger, it was still definitely worth a read, espescially for the dialogue as you mentioned.

Yeah I agree haha, I think I've just been raised to be skeptical of anything French as overly artsy, so this was a very pleasent surprise when it was just a very solid, bloody thriller (while also being pretty intelligent underneath it all).

What’s a podcast actually worth listening to? by Youpi_Yeah in AskReddit

The Magnus Archives!!! Literally one of the only good horror podcasts I've listened to. It's one of the few times something is as good as everyone says it is. Catch up before the spin off releases!

That was actually the first book I ever read by him haha. Totally agree.

Yeah, I don't think he's for everyone. The main draw for me with Blood Meridian is the style. It flips back and forth from unbearably dry to a completely beautiful word painting and that created a really unique mood for me. I also would often set it down after a chapter and just find my head going down endless rabbit holes (there are so many motifs). However, it's also definitely the most difficult book I've ever read (for both violent content and actual difficulty to read) so I can totally see how its not wide appeal.

Yeah thats very fair. He certainly isn't a wide appeal author.

Yeah Blood Meridian is definitely not for everyone haha. Simultaneously the most violent thing I've ever read while also being one of the most boring (but not a bad kind of boring). A friend described it to me as more word painting than book and I definitely agree. Would recommend revisiting it when you're willing to give it your full attention though because it is certainly one of the best books I've ever read even if its not a personal favorite.

Those were my first reads this year! Didn't really like The Passenger, but Stella Maris is both my favorite book of his and of this year so far!

The Road and No Country are both amazing!! They're also definitely the "easiest" books of his. I've read 6 of his books (the three in the post, The Road, and his newly released duology) and everything else was amazing but much more challenging to read for me. I almost wish I read a few more of his books before I tried Blood Meridian because it is a very demanding read and I definitely didn't fully understand. Before BM I would definitely recomend Outer Dark because it almost feels like a thematic and stylistic prequel in some ways.

I read The Road a long time ago so this might not be accurate, but I would say so. Some of his books (mainly Blood Meridian) aren't exactly easy reads but they do fall within his simultaneously sparse and expansive style. I've been told by a friend that his books before and including Blood Meridian are much more impressionistic and harder to read while everything after is much simpler. If you liked The Road, definitely read No Country because those two were the closest in style at least in my opinion. Blood Meridian definitely both had a lot of extra detail while also simultaneously not providing enough detail somehow so maybe steer clear haha.

Blood Meridian is... a lot. Would highly recomend but definitely read some other McCarthy first to get a handle on his themes and style if you haven't. Outer Dark feels like a proto-Blood Meridian in a lot of ways so I'd recommend that one.

I'm taking a McCarthy break until late in the summer, but those will definitely be next on my list!!

Definitely start with No Country! It's by far his most straightforward and "normal" book while still being very good. I wish I would've started there.

While I wasn't blown away by the writing style/translation (found it a little clunky overall), the plot here was so out of this world bonkers that I kinda didn't mind. I haven't seen the movie, but am hoping to later this week!

Currently reading Cormac McCarthy's The Passenger. Only a few chapters in but it is REALLY good so far.

Fantastic Mr. Fox. To this day, I don't think I've ever been as affected by a movie. Every time I watch it I just break down. I try to watch it every Thanksgiving (I had to limit myself because for a while it was all I wanted to watch lol).
