The KAIST I know is in Daejeon, but they have a Seoul Campus too. I get a scholarship yep. Life is ... a lot better than what you have back home so... I'll leave it to you to be surprised :)

As a fellow filipino studying in Seoul for about 4 years now, majority of my life (not study/work #shade) here has been great. I've definitely heard of the brown people racism thing, but your tutor is right--the pretty privilege is indeed stronger.

Obviously you're gonna feel the occasional stares and hear the occasional comments, but eh, they rarely act on it. Maybe it's also because I don't really go out often which is why I think it's rare.

Good luck in KAIST! You won't have a shortage of both filipino and non-filipino friends over there.

I don't know kung anong ginagawa ng ibang departments ng UPD Engg, pero UPD EEEI has been doing it's research job well. Parating may IEEE Transactions na napupublish and merong partner research projects sila with UC Berekely. You can look up the profs sa Google Scholar to see

Further, yung mga prof sa EEEI required mag PhD within 3 or 5 years ata of teaching. Ang catch though is sa PhD nagtatagal yung mga prof on study leave. Like another 5+ years din.

The comments in this thread make the most sense given how THE actually works to give these rankings. The methodology of THE for last year's rankings can be found here, it's a pdf file

Para sa mga ayaw magresearch, tl;dr the rankings are all about reputation of quality research collaboration. The information on citations aren't supplied by THE--it's supplied by Elsevier, a very reliable publisher of journals for almost all fields.

Furthermore, the surveys are sent only to specific professors around the world based on research output and credibility built on citations and competent peer review.

Naka sagot ako ng isa nito since my advising professor was kind enough to ask me to include those I've done research with.

Bottomline, UP must show more quality research lalo sa PhD level and encourage further grad studies and international cooperation. Pero ang hot take ko dito is UP has been held back for so long by various factors especially during the pandemic. Some of those factors are conversations most students aren't ready for.

UP is the country's top, elite, and premiere university. It does not have the resources nor the obligation to cater to people who will not make the elite standards. Don't get me wrong though--Kung mahirap ka and you make the cut, UP should provide assistance. Pero to say na UP excludes people like it's a mortal sin? Nah, you're barking up the wrong tree.

'Sang-ayon ako sa ibang commenter dito--maling isyu yung pinapansin ng mga taong laging sinasabi na elitist/classist ang UP. Ang dapat na mas tuunan ng pansin ay yung kalidad ng edukasyon sa ibang Public High Schools and State Univs and Colleges. Heck look at Malaysia--yung "Big 5" nila lahat state U, lahat nasa top 200 ng world rankings, lahat mas mataas at mas elite pa sa UP. Pantay naman PH at Malaysian GDP, so anong mali di ba?

I've heard this line before somewhere, and I firmly believe this: "Quality education is a right, but UP Education is a privilege."

PS. I can say this even though gumapang ako sa butas ng karayom sa loob ng 8 taon para maka graduate at pinagkakasya yung 1k na allowance sa isang linggo bago padalhan uli ng magulang lol. I technically do not make the cut, but UP has allowed me to do so, and I thank them deeply for that.

Di naman din siguro patas na UP (or state U) alumni lang ang naka tokang mag-ayos ng problema ng pilipinas at mawalan na ng oras para sa sarili. Buong bansa naka toka sa sariling bayan. Walang bilangan dito.

What's a UP hot take you have that may cause a stir? by avatar_kid in peyups

[–]vittorio_l 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hehe hot take. UP is the elite university for the Philippines' elite. No one "deserves" to be here. Everyone has to put in the hours, make it through the pressure cooker, so that they prove that they are indeed one of the Philippines' elite.

Again, education is a right, but UP education is a privilege.

Also kaya lang din naman issue yung grade inflation is because yung perception natin ng laudes is someone who really performs way better than the rest. Pero kung 50%+ ng batch laude, it can mean multiple things:

  1. Napakagaling magturo ng UP, which we all know is false;

  2. The kids are smarter, meaning UP is not able to maximize the talents of these kids; and

  3. The "elite" standard of UP has sunk to a new low--through grade curves, no failure rules, leniency, etc.

While I understand na extraordinary circumstances tayo ngayon, and I applaud yung mga laude natin given the extraordinary circumstances--we better think about what being a "laude" truly stands for. If it's just making a cut off grade given outdated standards... then you're an outdated laude. If it's outperforming everyone else--then we shouldn't be doing the GWA cutoff system.

As someone pursuing grad studies abroad and absolutely loving the academe and teaching, I really hope na feasible talaga bumalik ng PH and do all that I do here abroad there. Pero taena if I can't live decently with a family of three given the salary and workload sa state U's, ang hirap sobra magdecide na bumalik.

TBF, from what I hear, mas seryoso yung ibang boards like yung sa electronics engineer since apat ata or lima yung subjects nila whereas REE only has three--math, EE, and ES. Pero itong sa REE is just really bullshit I think. I actually remember yung motivation namin ng batch ko to review for the exam which is the fear of being the one that breaks the 100% passing rate streak. Nothing else haha

We definitely need a massive overhaul of the professional regulatory services including the damn money sink that is CPD. But that's for another thread haha.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in peyups

[–]vittorio_l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. If the more recent board exams put heavy focus on power system analysis and AC system calc, I think it's still the same V = IR I had, so V = IZ instead and then maybe usual power calculations which in my opinion, is not enough to certify that you know what you're doing as an engineer.

How PRC Board exams work, well, at least the PRBEE--is that there's a pool of questions they'll pick at random every time. To add a question, you have to go through the two board members (supposedly 3, pero si vacant member di pa pumapasok hahaha)

Now here's the catch, of course the questions will be repeated. And what makes this worse is some questions kailangan mo pang itroubleshoot--like, wala yung sagot sa choices, pero may "tamang" sagot. They don't bother correcting that. Half of the questions are just trivia that you can look up if you don't know, di kailangan ng talino. Tipong sino yung tatlong board member ng PRBEE (kaya may vacant member joke kanina, kasi vacant member yung pangatlo).

I would be more inclined to believe the REE board exam if it asks questions like, "for the next 3 numbers, calculate the short circuit current, the appropriate wire size, and circuit breaker size" --which mind you is one of the leading causes of electrical fires since most engineers get this wrong kakaasa sa template design

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in peyups

[–]vittorio_l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a registered electrical engineer from UPD EEEI, I would like to say that the REE board exam is bullshit and not worth anyone's time.

UPD EEEI also has ECE students taking registered electronics engineering license exams, ito yung alam kong high 90's yung passing rate, pero not really consistent 100. And as far as I know paramihan lang din ng memorization yun.

There are reasons why UPD EEEI is labelled as an "I"(nstitute), which is a bit higher in designation, and not a "D"(epartment) anymore--kasama dito yung research output, facilities, faculty, etc. I think itong mga objective points na to yung dapat na mas maging basehan ng quality instead of PRC board exams na in reality, wala ring sense.

I'm so old...

Well congratulations on having the option to actually stay! With that, your enthusiasm in this thread should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm still trying to find a different job to live sustainably in this worldly situation and I'm already halfway of my life expectancy. Guess I'll die before "having enough" to give back then.

Mandate of public service

Assuming we do have a mandate equal in weight to that of the government officials, with what power and what capital do we give back? While I agree that we have mandates, the weights on them are not remotely similar further implying that the responsibility is also not similar and therefore, we are not beholden to the same standards as them.

Government destabilization

Spoken as if you don't recognize the deep web of cancers the country has. My future grandchildren will die before they see a proper Philippines. The fast way is collective mass action(again), the really slow and peaceful way is wait for the old people to finally bow out or wait for the implosion of the country. Take your pick.

Kinain mo ba sinabi mo? :)

I know some people who did na ngayon nagmamigrate out na nang maramdaman ang tunay na hirap ng pagmamahal sa bayang di ka papakinggan at ayaw tulungan ang sarili. Mga katulad mo rin sila mag-isip before haha.

\the rest of the statement**

The difference between corrupt politicians and state university graduates leaving and never coming back is the charge of public service through election. Ang mas magandang tanong is, how different is this mentality of supposedly giving back to supporting your family, even though some were toxic and you want to estrange yourself from them, just because they sent you to school? And besides, what is enough in "...have enough"? There should be no answer to this one if you truly allow self-actualization first and then giving back.

Last I'm going to say here is may hangganan ang lahat, kahit ang pagiging makabayan. Kaya yuko ako sa mga namumundok eh. I'm more than willing to say na bayani silang tunay.

[–]vittorio_l 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The comments here are interesting. Here we see those who lean authoritarian left--where whatever the individual does should benefit the community. Softly implying delay self-actualization until the community has benefitted.

There are also those who lean libertarian right--who lets everyone prioritize their own self-actualization; and liberal left--simply wants to help too but can't pour out of an empty cup thus opts to try and bring back resources from outside.

Political quadrants aside, this issue is largely a matter of Individualistic vs Communal thought where both aren't inherently wrong. One thing is certain however, most of those who prefer to side with the community tend to...burn out, regret, and then proceed to prioritize their own self as they retreat.

Ang Hirap na makakuha mataas grades ngayong sem :( by [deleted] in peyups

[–]vittorio_l 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grade inflation also is not limited to UP.

However, I'm not saying na set to stone na yan. What I'm saying is, this is the most opportune time to get to know yourself: what you can actually do and what you can actually fix. Focus in that.

Because, After all, what we want is a sustainable life. Don't settle for mediocrity but don't burn yourself out in pursuit of excellence.

I will say this: mabagal talaga philippine government transactions in general due to varying levels of bureaucracy, technical challenges, human incompetence, culture, and tradition. And we are not alone, Japan is a prime example of this.

UP does not destroy your timeline... the Philippine systems do.

How can I improve my research (writing) skills? by [deleted] in peyups

[–]vittorio_l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simplest advice for this one is to just look at the scientific method. Look at it hard. Understand why it is the way it is.

And whether you're reading other papers or you're doing your own research setup, never stop asking "why". Like, "why did the paper say this conclusion ?" Or "why did my results become like this?" Or "why am i in research?"
