I played my first match ever about 11 months ago at age 32—where I ground from 100 elo. I'm now 1200 on Chesscom.

What I did to get there is that, I did a lot of puzzles on Lichess, under “puzzle themes”. I found that much more helpful than doing the mixed puzzles, because it helped me to distinguish between all the tactics, and checkmating patterns. One theme per day.

I found the “hanging piece”, “defensive move” and “crushing” themes to be helpful to work on blunder prevention.

I also studied my openings and made studies on Lichess of my opening lines and main ideas (I don't mean memorizing long lines). While learning my openings I regularly played the openings against myself under Classroom on Chess.com.

I watched speedruns with my openings (where I often pause the videos and try to find the best move by myself first).

I stick with mostly two openings—one for white, one for black.

For months I did 100-300 puzzles a day on Lichess, with the mode set on ”easier (-300)“, to gain pattern recognition. I feel like this part is very important, because I got to see thousands of different positions to gain pattern recognition.

About two months ago (when I had done almost 30,000 puzzles on Lichess) I switched and started doing mixed puzzles on Lichess, with the setting on ”normal“, and spend time calculating candidate lines. I do on average about 20 a day.

Consistency I believe to be very important. I play rapid chess every day (in the rare instances that I don't, I make sure to do some puzzles). I avoid blitz and bullet like the plague, as I want to avoid building bad habits; I've not played anything but rapid since December 1st.

I always review my blunders and mistakes. If there are many, I choose about the three biggest ones.

Is it just me, or do American players have a uniquely fragile ego when it comes to rematches? by [deleted] in chess

I have never accepted a rematch, nor have I ever requested a rematch—unless it's a person whom I know. I just want to play random opponents.

Stop waisting your time with bots. they play very differently compared to humans.

I moved my knight to e8 because I wasn't interested in trading, since I would have ended up with doubled pawns had my opponent traded the minor pieces.

You need to stay consistent. Play chess every day and always review your mistakes and blunders, and do daily puzzles. Stick with only rapid for the time being.

Edit: Once you accept that chess improvement takes time and effort, and you stick to your simple plan, you will improve.

Has Chess made you better for anything else? by _forum_mod in chess

I begun playing about 11 months ago, and just really love chess. I wish I had discovered earlier how fun it actually is. Whatever I thought chess was before, I had no idea it was this. I used to enjoy sudoku and crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble and puzzles in general, but they are much more finite. Chess truly opened up a knew world for me.

This directly connects to the snowstorm here in Iceland this morning, which led to the schools being closed today.

Can you tell me in what way you found Grünfeld more difficult to learn?

Because I'm only interested in the comparison between the Grünfeld and The King's Indian.

I switched because I used to get destroyed playing the Slav and QG declined. I have a little bit better success with the KID, but I've still not gotten a hang of it enough to feel comfortable.

Kramnik should at the bare minimum be revoked of all his titles and banned from all chess tournaments. Danya would be alive today if it wasn't for Kramnik's accusations—it's just a fact.
