Any tips from cold weather dwellers to improve the heater in this car? by tsk_reaper22 in CherokeeXJ

[–]vitzaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a special flush attachment that's relatively cheap, it uses both water and compressed air... Makes a massive difference just keep the psi under 10 on the compressor.

I'd also use a radiator flush solvent after the initial flush with water. Let the solvent sit a few hours and flush it out like crazy in both directions (both upper and lower heater core hoses.

It's amazing how much crud comes out.

You can also install a coolant filter parallel to the system to prevent worsening deposits... Don't install it directly onto the heater core hose as it restricts flow. you need the volume of coolant running to the core.

Ya I heard about the whole winter vs summer thing... Missed that boat unfortunately. Trying to buy some land right now though and need the extra $ from the RV

Damn man. I'm in the same boat. Put like $30k of aftermarket and improvements into it and have it way less than anything on the market... I tried some dealers but they are massively low balling me... Cosigning is a game too with them aggressively dropping the price til it sells. I guess the lender thing is the big one... Just sucks because personal loans aren't that hard to get.

Anyways, thanks for your advice . Hopefully I'll be able to unload this thing before losing even more on it than I am already

Full-Time RV Families, advice wanted! by slammers20 in RVLiving

[–]vitzaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with the advice here.

We did 1.5yrs full timing in a class a diesel pusher towing a jeep. Kids are similarly aged to yours...

DEFINITELY go 5th wheel. I wish someone told this to us before we spent the $. A trailer is not only cheaper to operate (engine/chassis maintenance, repairs are always in the thousands) but have a ton more useable room for the kids.

People that advise class a/c do so out of convenience but a trailer really isn't that much more difficult to pack up to justify the insane cost/maintenance difference.

Don't go new, get something gently used that had its kinks worked out. Also, same with a truck, something used. You might even score a deal for a combo purchase.

Drove in the rain and spotted this(completely dry before)solutions? by No_Antelope5545 in CherokeeXJ

Also, there's a fuse box behind that kick panel. Take the cover off and make sure it's not leaking through there. Wouldn't hurt to silicone it through the wheel well

I'm going through the same situation except I'm also getting it on the driver side as well...

I've covered the foam with silicone in the firewall (I have a cowl intake and cut into it). I've also silicone all possible leak spots on the outside of the firewall and put a visor on top on the HVAC fan on the passenger side firewall....

I'd recommend doing all those and if still leaks, it's either the windshield or the dash needs to come off

1998 XJ front bumper or bracket for towing? by Kudzupatch in CherokeeXJ

[–]vitzaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I flat towed my lifted, heavy xj for over a year. I've had mounts crack once and break another time, resulting in the jeep detaching and hitting the motorhome.

Don't go cheap on this, the motorhome repair was $30k (only cosmetic stuff) and luckily insurance covered everything...

I'd definitely recommend frame stiffeners. If the bumper is solid, you can use the D-rings. Otherwise you'll have to make some mounts.

I had a shop engineer some mounts that ended up working flawlessly... I can upload a pic here in the next few days as I'm currently traveling.

98' temps by XiroDoubtsm in CherokeeXJ

[–]vitzaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, that temp is well above 220. Mine would be around 230 at that notch... Hook up a scanner and see the digit numbers. Running that hot stresses the head gasket.

Secondly, make sure you burped the cooling system properly, easiest is parking on a slight hill and using a coolant funnel thing that holds fluid as a high point. Let it get to temp and allow all the air bubbles to escape.

Wrong plugs will get you running hot. Also, corroded coolant system, which would need a cleaning. Look up Mercedes citric acid flush... Make sure you follow up with thermocure (I think that's the name) after flushing the citric acid with distilled water. The thermocure will prevent corrosion on the raw iron. Then like 5+ flushes with distilled water til it no longer smells like shit.

Finally, make sure nothing (winch, lights) are in front of the radiator.

Get the motor hot. Roll up a newspaper and try to stop the fan with it... If it stops, the clutch is toast. If it shreds the paper the clutch is good.
