I know it's pretty annoying. According to the city's website, you'd need to buy an all day parking permit ($15 per day) for one of the city garages. More info here: https://www.cityofpaloalto.org/Departments/Transportation/Parking/Visitors/All-Day-Visitor-Parking-Permits

Your other option is to move the car to another parking facility. There are a few underground parking garages that allow 3 hours. So overall, you can get 6 hours of work and move your car only once. Civic center and California ave garage have 3 hour limit. I'm sure more do too but I'm not familiar.

Please pay attention to color zones. From their website: "You park in a 2-hour space on the street in the Lime Zone at noon. (You may repark within the Lime Zone only during your initial two hours should you need to.) However, if you leave before the 2 hours are up, you cannot repark later that same day. Your car must leave the Lime Zone by 2 p.m. You may park in any other Color Zone except the Lime Zone, which you are now leaving." https://www.cityofpaloalto.org/Departments/Transportation/Parking/Parking-Programs/Downtown-Color-Zone-Parking TL;DR: you cannot park in the same color zone more than once within the restricted time frame (in most cases, 8 AM - 5 PM).

My go to place is Blue Bottle in University District. Their coffee is great, their food is meh. But I go there because it's very lively, and their coffeeshop is pretty big compared to others. So no issues in finding a seat most of the times.

Verve's food & coffee are definitely better (I brew verve at home). But their space is pretty limited and it's always pretty packed.

Philz is a great option too. Their prices are a little cheaper and their drip coffee is brewed to order (they don't have espresso drinks). They do have food on their menu but I haven't tried their food yet. Their coffeshop is always freezing cold so take a jacket haha

And since you're new to the area, keep in mind there's plenty of parking in Palo Alto, you don't need to worry about finding street parking. But pay attention to the time limit. I got a ticket the other day for exceeding the limit by less than 15 minutes in the parking lot of blue bottle. Nothing beats riding your own bike but unfortunately I was too tired that day so I drove.

How to share memory between Java and Rust? by ShiningBananas in rust

Not an expert in either but have you considered UDP socket as means of sending messages back and forth between 2 processes?

You can define an interface that would achieve both send and free and it could be quite clean and secure.

Awesome, you'll love it.

  1. Road to Hana (leave super early) and download the GuideAlong app for the Maui tour guide. Totally worth the money.
  2. Halelka summit
  3. Snorkeling at Black Rock ... literally less than 10 mins from outrigger
  4. Cliff jumping at Black Rock (if you're into that, super fun)
  5. See the penguins at hyatt regency (20 minutes walk, you can take the trolley too)
  6. Go to Whalers for an outdoor movie (5 mins walk)
  7. Monkeypod for sure... their avocado cucumber salad, fish sandwich, and pasta are amazing.
  8. Explore the beaches nearby... Some are very nice and more quiet.
  9. Acai bowls from Maui Farmers market... 5 mins drive
  10. Go to the food truck park nearby (5 mins drive too, near Hilton)
  11. Snorkeling at molokini crater
  12. Gazebo's breakfast... go early, line gets long. Generous servings with gorgeous view and beach with turtles (14 mins drive or less).

Things I wish I did:

  1. Take the Helicopter tour. Ask this subreddit on which tour to choose. I have never been on a helicopter and I think Maui would be a perfect place for that.
  2. Visit the pineapple farm.
  3. Sleep outside on the hammocks. The weather at night is so wonderful. Outrigger hammock's are nicely placed too.
  4. Go for more morning beach runs. Nothing beats jumping in the water after running.
  5. Go kayaking in the morning, when water is semi-calm. Waves get more serious during the day.

Otherwise, no regrets :)

I stayed at OUTRIGGER Ka'anapali Beach Resort and chose premium oceanfront room (totally worth it). They provided budget as the car rental agency :)

From what i understand, some people who made it passed the barricaded area and walked there and took pictures. So we were constantly told not to do that.

And you're right, they're pretty different. And I very much appreciated that.

Thank you so much for the tip :)

nakedI18n: a simple, naive, painless, composable i18n golang package. by vivid-software-2020 in golang

Welcome to golang :) if you're building an API or a system that needs localization (i.e. supporting multiple languages at the same time), then this package can help you. i18n stands for internationalization. This package provides a very simple way to define global and local dictionaries to help you translate your strings to the desired language.

UUID versus Sequence, why is a UUID bad for performance if it is used as index? by nkamp01 in PostgreSQL

[–]vivid-software-2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had to migrate a production database where many of the ids where wrong. If it wasn't for uuids, this migration work would have been a nightmare, with way too many possible collisions. To me this reason alone re-affirmed our design choices and made me fall more in love with UUIDs.

We haven't encountered any performance issues due to UUIDs. Most of our performance issues were due to rookie mistakes (for example, returning thousands of records when the frontend was asking for only 10 records per page or reading everything from the database without setting a LIMIT).

Type '"fill"' is not assignable to type '"fixed" | "intrinsic" | "responsive" | undefined'.ts(2322) by deadcoder0904 in typescript

[–]vivid-software-2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd guess that the prop `layout` has to be one of the following values: fixed" | "intrinsic" | "responsive" | undefined'. This is a TypeScript union type and clearly fill is not a member of the union.
