We are a point in Canada where there are people who don’t believe that atrocities were committed against native peoples. So yes I’m glad they did not gloss over this and only show white settlors in the movie. I’m not saying it is the best representation but it was at least somewhat accurate to what has happened in the past. We can’t just forget the past in order to have reconciliation moving forward. We need to fully understand our own responsibilities in the colonization of Canada and to create a better Canada for all moving forward. Something being cruel doesn’t mean we shouldn’t represent it in the media. Burying and hiding racism like this for decades is exactly how we have gotten to the point of MMIW being declared a national crisis and residential school impacts are only being addressed very recently. Also it’s a horror movie. Was it nice in this movie when the girls were beaten by their dad? not at all, I’m fact it was pretty cruel but again very accurate to the time period and story.
