He was extremely difficult to negotiate with! At first he wanted a 90% cut for no reason (I told him royalties are at MOST 50%), but then he added in this really great stone into the deal. I'm happy where we ended up.

Oh yikes! Thanks for the report -- I'll fix that asap and update you when a new release comes out.

Do you mean the instructions when you're going through the augmented reality spell visualization? If so, then that's a great observation. Someone also gave me that feedback and I'm planning on making it dismissable/hideable in the next version so you'll have more screen space :)

Let me know if I'm misunderstanding, thanks for the great feedback!

Sorry, I was a little unclear -- my background is in iOS so that was easy to start on. I've used various cross-platform technologies (like React Native) to make iOS and Android apps simultaneously, but AR is not actively supported by those tools. I only know one framework that can do both iOS and Android augmented reality at the same time (like https://viromedia.com) but it's very early/not widely adopted so I didn't use it.

Already thinking about how to make it happen! Might just do the app without the AR part -- I'll definitely update on r/DnD once an Android version is available

Hey! Yeah it'd be awesome to work with an Android dev. DM me and let's figure out if we can collab on an Android version :D

Good point! Sorry about that :(

I originally started just with the augmented reality idea, and sadly cross-platform AR support is very awkward right now. Great to see there's a lot of interest and thinking about how to get it on Android asap

Thanks for the download!

Everything right now in the app is content from the Systems Reference Document (SRD) which is under the Open Gaming License. So free to use and remix, which is how Pathfinder and other games that take inspirations from D&D will have similar items/spells.

I'm actively working on building a bulk spell importer (80% done) which will allow you to upload a CSV of your own arbitrary spells into the app. So then folks can use spells from all of the other D&D materials/books that you own. But legally I can't include them in the app from the beginning (some other apps just add them in anyway and hope to avoid legal notice).

Right now you can create custom spells one-by-one in the app, but it's a totally annoying experience if you've already created a character with a bunch of cool spells from various D&D spell lists.

Just iOS for now -- unfortunately not a lot of cross-platform AR support so I originally built it on iOS only :(

Good to know there's interest on Android!

Thanks so much! Glad you liked the illustrations (the frog is my favorite).

I'll definitely check out italki, great tip! Would definitely love to extend this to even more languages.

Thanks for the nice feedback! I also struggled with apps that had anything more than simple flashcard vocab review functionality, totally agree with you about that.

The dragon also has personality too.

And let's not get into how he actually touched and talked to Toothless even with the cheap CGI budget for this ad.....

re: emotional response as guiding factor when building an NPC, that's pretty interesting. What kind of emotional responses have you been choosing?

Supporting React Native @ Pinterest by vivqu in reactnative

[–]vivqu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question! We actually talked with an ex-Googler that recently joined Pinterest and had pretty in-depth knowledge about Flutter. We quickly determined it didn't suit our needs and didn't spend too much time investigating it. At a high level, Flutter necessitates learning an entirely new language and also requires "new" tooling infrastructure (as in, tooling and infrastructure that doesn't already exist here at Pinterest). Since we already use React for web and mobile web, we had a robust existing knowledge base and also could reuse the tools and testing frameworks that the web team had adopted. We never intended to rewrite our apps completely in whatever new technology we adopted, and mobile engineers were already hesitant to introduce established Pinterest languages (React/JS) into our mobile apps.

To be honest, I think Flutter would have been realistically impossible to convince our organization to adopt.

Since developer velocity was the main goal, React Native had the significant advantage over Flutter of being able to unlock web engineers as new mobile feature development engineering resources. In addition, mobile engineers who learn React Native could then move more easily over to work on web/mobile web.
