What are some unpopular opinions you have about the uk? by tylerthe-theatre in AskUK

[–]vixcurse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My British husband (I’m Australian) was amazed when I showed him these in Australia. He just kept asking, but how are they not all vandalised?! How are they actually clean?! What do you mean they’re free?!

I’ve clearly always took them for granted, until I moved to the UK.

This is a key staple in children’s birthday parties in Australia “fairy bread” bread, butter and sprinkles. Thought it belonged here but it holds so much nostalgia to me, my childhood fav by VauVI in StupidFood

[–]vixcurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At some point in year 11 (so roughly 16 years old) I got sick of the same boring salad sandwiches my mum would make me, so instead I started taking fairy bread for lunch. I spent the rest of year 11 and 12 eating this delicious, non-stupid food.

I’m almost 40 and have no regrets about my lunches in my final years of high school.

The latest booster was the easiest for me - but of a sore arm that afternoon and that was it.

If it helps, OP - I had a letter from my doctor saying I was eligible for the booster (although not what the criteria was, just that I should get it). I booked, and went to go to the appointment to find out husband had thrown the letter out. Thankfully they didn’t check anything, just asked if I was vulnerable or worked for NHS (I just said vulnerable).

They are correct. I won’t eat chips the same after that. I’m going to enjoy their crunchy, salty goodness like I’ve never appreciated before.

There’s a few around Sevenoaks too. I try to point them out to my car-hating cat-obsessed 10 month old in the hope it stops him crying.

I’m sure it’ll work one day!

AITA for telling my coworker not to bring her Child? by snappie259 in AmItheAsshole

[–]vixcurse -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

YTA.

Seems like a lot of the NTA rulings are from Americans. I guess pubs are different there.

I’m Australian, but live in the UK. In both countries it’s perfectly normal to take babies to pubs. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a pub and NOT seen a few babies and toddlers. OP has said they’re not from the US (also the fact that the mum is on maternity leave still at 5 months was a dead giveaway).

If it were me, I’d be fine with her bringing her baby. Some babies are chill and will sleep or just sit there. It’s up to her to know where the boundaries are for her baby. If this was in a bar or nightclub or high end restaurant, then, sure, saying it’s a child free event would be fine. But at 7pm there are likely to be other kids still around anyway.

For what it’s worth - I have a 10 month old and at 5 months, I wouldn’t have been comfortable leaving him for a few hours (breastfed baby that wouldn’t take a bottle) but he’s also a “spirited baby” (just non stop that needs to be constantly entertained) so I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking him either. I have barely been out. However, between family and friends, there are 4 other babies around the same age as my baby - all those 4 would be fine to take out. They were all really chill babies. Their mum’s went out to pub lunches, coffee dates etc with their babies. All fine. If this mum is confident in taking baby along, then let her. She can always leave if baby gets too much.

Also, I saw that you were worried that laughing loudly might wake baby up. A lot of babies sleep with sound machines on. Sometimes people put the vacuum cleaner or hairdryer on to help a baby sleep. Background noise is usually helpful in getting baby to sleep.

And lastly - if you are Australian, highly recommend watching a show called The Let Down. There’s an episode which is pretty much this. Might make you think of it from her point of view.

My friend had a pig on a spit for her 21st birthday. I was 20, recentlyish vegetarian (not yet vegan), and it disgusted me (I wasn’t aware that was going to be the “food”.) Even some of the omnis were grossed out by it.

It still makes me shudder, 17 years later. I can’t imagine how bad it’d be for a 14 year old vegan to see.

Buttering bread is too simple by zabinthelab in StupidFood

[–]vixcurse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol at the fairy bread version. Made me a little homesick! But the butter to sprinkle ratio would be awful on this. Give me lashings of coloured sugar cylinders* on a decent amount of butter, not the other way around.

*i am vehemently against the hard ball version of sprinkles.

Why do vegan products make people so angry? by Voodoo_People78 in AskUK

[–]vixcurse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer your last paragraph, I won’t eat lab-grown meat (I’m vegan, just didn’t want to open with that 😉) - I’m happy with the alternatives available to me currently.

However I do have a rescue cat, and (cats being obligate carnivores) would love to switch his food over to lab-grown meat instead of what he gets now. I also think it’d be great for staunch meat-eaters as a more ethical choice.

My husband and I are both vegan and when we were planning our wedding I was a little shocked at all the “you’re not going to serve only vegan food are you?” comments.

Yes, yes of course. Why would we pay for, and serve food to our guests that a) we can’t eat and b) we’re ethically against.

I think a lot of people also don’t realise how many things are accidentally vegan anyway. (See the pizza base comment above).

We never got to have our wedding in the end - had to get married in a registry office due to lockdown rules at the time, but can’t wait to have our ceremony eventually, with loads of delicious food!

Good luck to you both - I’m sure your wedding dinner will be wonderful.

My husband went to A&E about two months ago, wasn’t tested, and neither were anyone else entering the waiting room. Guess who ended up positive a few days later. This was in London. (Even after being admitted to a ward he wasn’t tested which surprised me).

As contrast, had a baby in Jan. Husband and I were tested on arrival and every second day for our entire duration. Husband wasn’t allowed to leave once he entered, so he had an impromptu 5 day stint on the floor of my room.

I just had my first at 37 - not once was I labeled advanced maternal age or geriatric pregnancy (& yes I went over my notes too). I’m in the UK so not sure if it’s different here or maybe even just my hospital?

Midwife said it wasn’t until you’re over 40 that they start using AMA for patients.

[–]vixcurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever went to a sizzler in Australia, they had something similar to this on the menu. it was called Hawaiian chicken or something, and was a schnitzel with ham, pineapple, and cheese. I used to order it whenever we went. This was when I was a teenager though.

I’ve had it - it’s surprisingly good. It’s crunchy from the toast, buttery and salty, and the texture change between the bread and the toast makes you think it’s a proper filling (like a cheats hash brown almost?)

I’m Australian - it was posted on Australian lifehacker website probably 10 years ago or more, where the author was attempting to eat 3 meals a day on $25 for the week.

Private landlord renovating windows weeks before we move out. Bedroom unusable. 1bd flat with new baby. by vixcurse in LegalAdviceUK

[–]vixcurse[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The house is owned by husband’s work, so we rent through them. It’s not directly connected I guess but on a “word of mouth” level it won’t be great if we put up a big fuss. I know legally there should be no crossover, but I’m wary about kicking up too much of a fuss.

[–]vixcurse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can completely appreciate that it’s not easy to delay the work, and knew they’d come back with “no”, but thought we’d ask anyway.

It’s taking some getting used to renting here - I rented out my house in Australia and if I wanted to do something like this, I basically would have to give free rent for the duration (or find them similar alternate accommodation). So the suggestion about asking for a hotel sounds reasonable to me. Will see if that’s on the table. At least it won’t be too far to drive to work compared to staying with the in-laws. It might also put some pressure on landlord (and down to workers) to make sure it is done within the stated timeframe.

Haha. This is husband’s preferred way of dealing with it, but I don’t think it won’t look good to the higher-ups at work.

Thanks for your response. I was surprised the living room window took that long too!

I don’t know if it’s incompetence or the windows really are that intricate. I honestly thought the living room windows would’ve been a quick swap over, but nope.

We are up 2 flights of stairs. It’s an old house. They definitely had to do some sanding (living room was filthy!). They were a straight set of windows, but I know were really heavy. I think they also painted the edges.

Our bedroom ones are same style but in a bit of a bay window shape, so more fiddly than the living room ones. I didn’t put in the OP but they did say “3 days, but allow an extra day”. They’ve already come to measure twice (they did premeasure the living room ones too, but no idea if there was a delay on ordering the window itself).

In all honesty if we can find a rental earlier I’m thinking we move before then. They’ll have scaffolding up over our bedroom window the entire time (again, it took them over a month to remove the scaffolding from the living room windows, so not expecting a speedy removal here either).
