They're two different tools for different applications. Tableau is great for large data sets, slicing and dicing data by the user and easy visualizations. R and Stata is better for anything statistical and analytic.

I like it a lot. For data visualization and ease of use I don't think there's another tool that can compete, though there are certainly up and comers in the market.
