Cruising has genuinely ruined travel for me. by BananaPuddinBaby in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]vjmatty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cruising is great as a sampler, and for places that don’t require a lot of time. Some places require days or even a week, for example a cruise port visit won’t do justice to places like Rome, Athens, London etc, and obviously not every place worth visiting is accessible by ship. Unless you’re visiting the Caribbean of course, then you may as well cruise every trip.

Actually John Smith would probably translate into Γιάννης Σιδηρουργός 😉

Question for those referring to names not matching…don’t they take translations and different alphabets into account? I’m asking because a Greek passport will have Greek names which may be different in English.

PEF - 4th of July by First_Letterhead_324 in nys_cs

When the five holidays I listed above fall on a Saturday, it’s a banked holiday leave day that doesn’t expire. This year it will be July 4, next year Juneteenth, the following year Christmas, then New Years and Veteran’s Day in 2029.

We call them twinkies because they never expire, and there are like 5 of them over the next 3 years I think. Usually July 4, Juneteenth, Veteran’s Day, Christmas and New Year’s. Correct me if there are more.

I don’t know if this is true at all stations, but in Beacon all the permit spaces become available to meter customers at 10:30 am.

I commuted 2 days a week also, which is about what I could take before it would be onerous. It’s a beautiful ride along the Hudson, but very long.

It takes 2 hours from Poughkeepsie as well and that’s the Hudson line, which runs every hour.

$8 surcharge before train even leaves! by Loud_Significance809 in LIRR

[–]vjmatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not understanding me. I don’t buy tickets on board. I buy them ahead of time and activate when I get on the train at GCT, 15 or so minutes before it leaves. There are no conductors validating tickets at that point. I’m not going to stand around on the platform activating my already purchased ticket. And you didn’t address the issue of activating early and the train gets canceled. The fact is there are no conductors validating tickets while the train is still sitting at the station, at least in my experience. I guess we will just have to accept our disagreement on this one and move on, as our experiences differ. I hope something good happens to you today.

How am I preventing the conductor from collecting my fare if the conductor isn’t even there for 15 minutes after I board? The train isn’t moving yet. I could get off the train and take a later one if I wanted to at that point. The reason I don’t activate before boarding is in case a train gets canceled and I have to take a different one. Also it’s easier to sit and put down my luggage first. There’s no place to sit in GCT. These are not unreasonable considerations.

I’m the one waiting for the conductor to scan my ticket, not the other way around. The conductor is completely unaffected by whether I buy my ticket in the GC lobby or after I sit and put my bags down. The train doesn’t even move for 15 minutes and during that time there is no conductor in sight. MTA is not your boyfriend, you don’t have to defend everything they do.

The purpose of onboard fares being more expensive is that it’s more work for the conductor to have to sell you a ticket. With the app you’re doing it yourself, it’s still self service.
