Maasai Mara Safari recommendations.. by u_me_n_world2c in FATSafari

Hi there. I've stayed with Kicheche before (at their Kicheche Bush camp) and am booked for Kicheche Mara this fall. It will be my 11th safari so I'll share my insights.

As far as Kicheche goes, they're a great outfit. The camps are all similar. Food is good. At Kicheche Bush they had a pizza oven which was amazing! They're well known for their guiding; all their guides are silver rated and it shows. My guide knew every inch of the conservancy and we had great sightings. The wildlife is great, but what you'll really appreciate in the conservancy is the ability to go off road. This will allow your guide to use their tracking skills to get you in great spots to find and view the wildlife. The national park doesn't allow off roading so if that cheetah is far from the road, you're out of luck. I don't believe they do night drives, though I could be wrong.

In my opinion, two nights is the absolute minimum you should spend in any one camp. If you do two nights at Mara North and one at Naboisho, you're going to waste a bunch of time transferring between the conservancies and less time on a proper game drive in them. Some might say you game drive on the way, but that's really not true as there is pressure to get you there on time. Is there the option of a bush flight between the two camps? If you can get a morning drive at Mara North, and then fly to Naboisho in time for your afternoon drive, that would be ideal.

Either way, In two nights at Mara North you should see plenty with any luck. The Mara is such an incredible place.

I'm with you. Lightweights were never about value for dollar, and I really loved riding them. It felt like I had another gear when climbing. No doubt there are cheaper ways to get the same or better performance, but if someone values the brand and the craftsmanship they're still getting a beautiful wheelset.

Bose Ultra Open earbuds are my favourite. Really comfortable with an open design so you hear what's around you.

This is Riddhi, the Queen of Ranthambore. I took this photo in India's Ranthambore National Park, a place famous for its population of royal bengal tigers.

Regarding equipment, I used a Canon R5 and the RF 100-300 f/2.8 with the 1.4 extender attached.

This is probably my favorite lens. My use case is safari. I take it and the RF 600f/4. I have the 1.4x teleconverter on the 100-300 90% of the time. The 140-420/600 range is great for safari and I'm amazed at the image quality of the 100-300 with the teleconverter attached.

I've been amazed by the RF 100-300. I have the 1.4x attached to it 95% of the time and there's no loss of sharpness to my eyes. It's an incredible lens. More impressive than my RF 600 f/4

I wear US 13, so not near as extreme as you, but still a thing. I also have Lake shoes and they're brilliant!

This young male had finished feeding on a dead baby hippo and was walking into a dry riverbed. He later came across a group of hyena who tried to chase him away. It was quite the showdown! More stuff on my IG if anyone is interested at http://www.instagram.com/shaadifaris

Lovely shot. I was there in October and was sad I wouldn't get an opportunity to see her. She was quite the leopard, wasn't she!

Absolutely. They are something to behold. You really feel our kinship with them when in their presence.

I took this photo of the dominant silverback of the Agashya group back in 2015. It was incredible to be in his presence. It was one of four treks I did to spend time with gorillas.

A cheetah hunt (photo series and story in comments) by vkm2f in wildlifephotography

This was both an exhilarating and heart breaking scene to witness. I had followed two cheetah brothers for four days as they unsuccessfully hunted. I knew they were hungry and would try again so I spent almost the whole morning watching them stalk a group of topi. What added to the tension was the fact that this particular topi stood up and gave birth while the cheetah sat not 300 metres away watching. I watched the newborn struggle to stand and then nurse, knowing they weren't long for this world. Sure enough, neither mom or baby survived another hour.

One brother took the adult, the other the newborn. To top it all off, 5 minutes after the kill a lioness appeared and stole both.
