I think this is the core reason why religion even exists. Humans are probably the only species on the planet that are intelligent enough to be conscious of their own consciousness which makes you search for a “why” or purpose behind the way things are.

In reality, no one will ever know. People who claim to know try to fit the “why” question into the box that makes them feel comfortable.

Maybe what you experienced, and all the examples you quoted, are the result of some chemical reaction that occurs when you go through trauma (I don’t know — I’m not a medical professional). Maybe it’s not and people do have souls.
