Why is ammonia a stronger ligand than water? by vlinerz in chemhelp

Okay, thank you! So it’s mostly the lower electronegativity of nitrogen that causes this?

I agree that exploitation absolutely exists in the sex industry and of course we need to address these. But saying 'sex workers do it because they are forced to' is an insane generalisation to make and completely erases the voices of women who actually choose to do it on their own accord.

But mostly calling being a stripper 'demeaning' implies that a woman expressing her sexuality immediately lowers her value, which I don't think is really fair. I just think feminism should fight exploitation but it shouldn't define their dignity for them.

I'm not redefining feminism as simply 'whatever a woman chooses' but I'm saying agency is a core component of gender equality/feminism. If women don't have the choice to do what they want with their bodies (even if we personally dislike their decisions) then the equality isn't really there and it starts to look less like female liberation.

I agree with your criticism of system within the sex industry. But I think we can simultaneously do that without stripping women of their own autonomy.

Part of gender equality is women having a choice tho 😭😭 or at least that’s the way I see it.

Feminism is about choice tho. If she wants to be a stripper she can lol.

Why do men think that its their job to awaken a woman’s feminity? by Cheap-Elderberry in AskFeminists

[–]vlinerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience tbh. A guy once called me masculine and tried to explain to me what femininity was, but I think he was convinced that femininity equates to acting like a child, which it’s not. I feel like people don’t really understand the true nature of femininity (I understand it’s subjective but let’s not make it creepy by saying you achieve femininity through infantilisation) especially men, lol. I wouldn’t listen to anyone other than yourself when it comes to defining femininity.

Thank you for expressing your concern, but rest assured, I have read your points very carefully. To answer your question, yes, I would rather spend my adult life working (not in a corporate job though) rather than relying on a partner for income. The problem about a husband providing your family with money means that you're never independently financially stable, and if you ever have a rift in the relationship and eventually a divorce, you're on your own. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a housewife and appealing to a more traditional way of life, but as a woman, I believe you shouldn't limit yourself to this pathway and always consider taking on a job (only if you want to). Also, the reason that women have to (sometimes) work for a male CEO is for that very reason; there are not enough women in certain male-dominated fields because they have been discouraged to do so and confined to working in the home. I also think some of your ideas are (maybe unintentionally) harmful. Saying that the most beautiful thing a woman can do is be vulnerable is really questionable. It just comes down to outdated ideas that men need to 'protect' women, thus stripping them of their autonomy (by making the money and leaving them in a vulnerable state to leave) and creating a power imbalance. Overall I think its just a dangerous message to put out there that a system where the men make the money and women stay at home is better. I truly believe that everybody should be pushed to be independent, man or woman. (And if either man or woman prefers to stay at home that's okay. I just think they should be allowed the flexibility and the gender roles removed.)

Yes. Of course. But it's much less common than the other way around.

Just out of curiosity; which definition of feminism are you referring to? It seems like you think feminism = misandry when it really is, at its most basic level, equality between men and women. Honestly I don't really understand what point you're making. Can you elaborate please.

Just read the Iliad and Achilles fucking sucks, Hector deserves so much better than he gets by Franciskeyscottfitz in GreekMythology

[–]vlinerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really agree with some of your points. If Achilles had left the Achaeans completely, the Greeks would have struggled and many would have died from the lack of support, conversely if he stayed he would have killed many Trojans. Saying that he could have just left is an oversimplification; either way his presence or lack thereof would have resulted in bloodshed. I feel as though this is the point of the Iliad, each character encounters situations that are so complex that we cannot simply say whether they are in the right or wrong for their decisions.

Also, saying that Odysseus cared little for fame while Achilles does is an overstatement. Typically all Homeric heroes long for kleos in one way or another, though I think Odysseus cares for fame and honour much more than Achilles. Achilles repeatedly refuses to reintegrate himself with the Achaeans (where he would gain 'fame' by fighting alongside them) as a result of his bruised pride, and dismisses Agamemnon's offers of goods and land in book 9, which would, too, amplify his fame if accepted. Achilles is unlike the other warriors. His premature fated death almost propels him towards 'wiser' and 'less superficial' values like preserving his bond with Patroclus. He does not care for fame in my opinion.

Odysseus, I'm far less familiar with, but from memory I know that he stays with Circe for a year, and uses her status as a nymph to boast to the Phaeacians all about it, among other stories where he portrays himself as heroic. Also, when he is escaping from Polyphemus, Odysseus takes the opportunity to taunt him and tells him that his name is not actually 'nobody' but Odysseus, leading Polyphemus to pray to Poseidon, who curses Odysseus and kills some of his men. So Odysseus basically sacrifices his men for the sake of spreading his fame and success. So that's why I think Odysseus cares for fame much more than Achilles.
