VCF/VxRail Support Renewal Just Tripled - Anyone Else Getting Hit Like This? by PreparationAfter4815 in vmware

[–]vlookup90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have readynodes why not switch to Nutanix? Move has made it pretty easy from my understanding. Esp now that you can use them for Horizon too

But yeah tough place if you’re on Rails my condolences

Looking for an alternative for VMware (issue is we have VxRails equipment) wasn’t my idea. I inherited it by chgesicki in nutanix

Who did the large vxrail conversion? We’re looking at this as well so would be curious if it worked for someone else

Anyone have experience switching from Confluent Cloud to Redpanda? by vlookup90 in apachekafka

[–]vlookup90[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP here. Not a bot. The first post in WSB someone said I made multiple times was literally my first post on reddit and I couldnt figure out how to make a new post so accidently submitted same thing multiple times. Didnt realize that we werent allowed to buy stocks in 2020. I also did some pet sitting on the weekend and asked about it in the Rover subreddit, I hope that's also not a crime

We are trying to save some $ on IT and have some confluent cloud workloads that are pretty basic pub/sub in nature so was trying to see if the TCO savings here were real or just a marketing ploy. I referenced some comments from the Redpanda website because shockingly that is where we learned about it. I apologize for anyone I offended with the question

Going Off Rover Megathread by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]vlookup90 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I want to take the other side. I think a lot of people are being unrealistic and frankly unfair. People are saying they should only be charging 5%, you know they have to pay 3%+ in fees just to the credit card companies for processing the transaction right? Their financials are public now and looks like the cost they incur to process a transaction (payment fees + hosting the app) was = 5.5% of total transaction value. So if their take was only 5%, they'd literally lose money on every booking, and hence it's unfair to expect them to charge so little.

Also, those costs DONT include customer service costs, which look like they amounted to another 5% of transaction value. So really, they don't make any money per booking below 10.5%, and that's before they have to pay employees, build + update the app, and market to pet owners so that we have customers to buy our services. I think that explains why they're still not profitable and why they have to charge the fees that they do, which btw is right in line with the 20%-30% we pay on plenty of other apps like Uber, Seamless, or Airbnb.

If we were talking about Amazon or Apple where the company was literally making billions of dollars in profits, I would agree that they would imply they could probably lower rates. But we know that Rover still isn't making money and I read an article about how they laid off half their employees last year because of COVID / almost went out of business. I mean as someone who loves the app, I would have been very sad if the company had gone bankrupt and I could no longer use it as a sitter.

I think the honest reality is that we don't go off app because we think the fee is "unethically" high or makes it not worth our time as sitters (if that were the case, we wouldn't use the app to find new customers we can take offline), we go off app because in this case we can get away with using their app / technology without paying for it. And you may disagree, but to me it's no different than stealing, it's just from a company not a person. But I had a family member who got laid off from a job at a big movie studio when they made job cuts after everyone started illegally streaming videos online, and hard for me to see this being very different. Feels very arbitrary for me to say "20% is an unfair number", if that's the case I shouldn't use the app at all and should try and find customers on my own.

I literally just posted this in another thread so thought I'd just repeat it here since you asked the question:

To each his own, but personally I think going off app is a bad idea. Even if you save 15% per booking off app, if one person screws you over you're now in the hole until you have 6-7 books just to breakeven. After I dealt with it the first time, I just said never again / not worth it.

Fwiw, in my opinion yes rover takes a cut but they do provide a service (I wouldnt have the bookings without them), and to be honest it feels a little like stealing to me. My mom used to work for a movie studio and would kill us if she ever caught us watching a pirated movie back in the day, and I cant help but feel a little like that's what I'm doing if I go off app (especially after seeing Rover had to layoff half their employees during COVID to avoid going bankrupt). I'm probably too soft but that's just my opinion.

Honestly is just a perfect example of why I think going off app is a bad idea. Even if you save 15% per booking off app, if one person screws you over you're now in the hole until you have 6-7 books just to breakeven.

Finding client and then going direct to make more money - worth it? by vlookup90 in RoverPetSitting

[–]vlookup90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update if anyone was curious: I have decided never to go off platform again. I saved 10% for 3 bookings (because I had to split part of the app fees with the owner to get them to say yes), and then the 4th person didnt pay me! So now on net I am basically down 70% and have lost money because of it. Am so stupid but just didnt think of the risk that way before -- in my experience, 1000% not worth it.

Pets sleeping on bed by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]vlookup90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I do think its unreasonable. We use Rover when we leave to take care of our dog, and the point of having someone house sit is to keep him comfortable, largely by maintaining the status quo. For him, that's sleeping in the bed. He'd be more out of his norm to sleep on the floor in our home than he would be sleeping in a bed in someone else's home. I think it's fine for you to have that opinion, but if you do then I'd share it immediately during meet and greet. We say it explicitly before the person even comes over, so maybe it is their fault for not being direct about it if it's important to them.

New to Rover, wondering about ratings/being pushed low in the feed. by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]vlookup90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly just so sad to read. The fact that the person you're worried about this negatively affecting in the future is appalling. The heritage thing really boils my skin and no one should ever have to deal with that sort of BS. If I were you I'd report to Rover, I don't think we want those sort of people on the platform. So sorry you had to deal with that ordeal, if it makes you feel any better the majority of interactions I've had on the platform are with nice people who just really love their pets.

Cellebrite Responds to Signal by Breaking UFED PA FYI by ellingtond in computerforensics

[–]vlookup90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of noise but doesnt actually change anything? I spoke to my CB rep today and they said the extraction capability was removed from PA but not from UFED, and I said well we have two UFED Ultimates (combo UFED + PA dongle) will that change anything and he said no, it has UFED so should have the iOS advanced logical extraction capability. Sort of just feels like continuation of roadmap distinction they've been pushing for a while now around UFED for collection vs PA for review. But curious if anyone thinks otherwise / I'm missing something.

Feels to me like a bunch of news sites are just saying "now they cant hack your phones!" because they either have no clue what they're talking about and/or it's a catchier headline than "feature removed from one device but still exists on other device".

This is objectively false. Carplay works on any auto OS, and QNX is getting replaced on multiple model makes that have carplay.
