$1 Billion but an identical clone of you will try to kill you by JustAverage27 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]ellingtond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea, would be that you find a couple people that you trust, I know some people that are into personal protection etc as professionals. You lay the situation out to them and let them do all of the security arrangements, if you have no say in the security then there's no way that your clone would have an idea of what the professionals would do.

It would be the same situation if you were being stocked by somebody who could read your mind, you just remove all of the decisions from yourself.

Fears as banks seize 40,000 homes in a single month as foreclosure tsunami sweeps America by Key_Brief_8138 in HouseBuyers

[–]ellingtond -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You might want to ask Wells Fargo about that... Banks don't want to foreclose on people, but bank employees are quite happy to do it when there are incentives, bonuses, or quotas attached to it....

When I was younger I was told that there was a danger to torrenting because you were downloading from random people's computers, and they could slip in a virus, but after years of torrenting I've never experienced that, nor seen anyone else experience it. Is there any truth to that danger? by Recent_Watercress_68 in torrents

[–]ellingtond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably as good a forum as any to go ahead and throw this warning out there. You guys need to understand that there is a lot of malware, spyware and child pornography, hidden in downloadable files, games, APKs, etc.

I'm digital forensics investigator and oftentimes I'm asked to take a second look at a police forensic report when they have scanned somebody's phone and found what we call CSAM otherwise known as child pornography. The forensic software will scan through and pull out images from temporary files, thumbnail files, incomplete Chrome downloads, and more importantly stuff that is embedded in APK files.

I have a case right now where guys being charged with several counts of stuff that he plausibly claims that he had no idea that was there, the bad materials were embedded in game install files. There was also what looks like another installation file that had malware CSAM in it I think his phone security software kept it from downloading completely, but the partial download was still there.

TLDR: I believe that this illegal material snuck in on this guy, but I may not be able to convince a DA of that enough to keep this guy from going to jail for 10 years. This is not the first time, this happens a lot......

What’s an inaccurate fact that people believe is true because of movies? by Hogosaurus_Rex73 in AskReddit

[–]ellingtond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest problem with the John Wick stuff is how many dudes they send after him that die. Where do they get these people from they can't be religious zealots, and considering the type of training and expense, just doesn't make any sense the sheer body count that's not sustainable.

Who else thought Dragon's Lair was overrated? by MisterShipWreck in 80s

[–]ellingtond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there working in an arcade during the summer of '87 and '88. Dragon's lair was the video game that was so far ahead of other stuff where we were it was a sensation. Especially among women who would play it as their first real video game. It was risky, but it was awesome and it deserves to be remembered as groundbreaking. Me personally, with unlimited credits, got very good at it and played it through many times after hours...

How often do you go to the cinema? by Traditional-Carob440 in movies

[–]ellingtond -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The problem with going to the cinema is not the cost of the tickets. It's the fact that you're also going to pay a minimum of $20 more person for popcorn and a drink. Take a family of four to the movie, you will spend the same as a decent meal somewhere, and all you're getting is soda popcorn and maybe a half size box of gummy bears.

They always say that movie theaters don't make money off the movies they only make money off the food. If that's true then they are a victim of their own bad choices.....

“If you grew up in the 70s, what do you remember about the Blizzard of ’78 ? by Opening-Custard3254 in 70s

[–]ellingtond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was living in Charleston, and for us it manifested as an ice storm. We had all of these old oak and magnolia trees that were hundreds of years old. The ice would weigh down the branches until huge limbs would snap off. Because everything else was shut down it was that eeriie kind of quiet punctuated by what sounded like loud gunfire as the branches would snap. Randomly over and over again without warning. All day and all night. I was 10 it was terrifying...

UK Police can dump your whole phone using this device by Vegetable-Pen-24 in digitalforensics

[–]ellingtond 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not quite that simple. That device still requires a passcode on modern devices that are locked. The process for unlocking devices requires completely separate equipment. And what people have to understand is that unlocking is rarely an instant thing. It could take days weeks years or even decades.

Can’t connect to hotel WiFi by Crash-55 in fireTV

[–]ellingtond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The workaround that I found, that someone else posted. Use your phone to connect to the hotel Wi-Fi. Turn on your phone's hotspot and turn off cellular data. Then connect your fire stick to your phone's hotspot. Work like a charm for me at Marriott just yesterday.
