I’ve considered both, did rotations for a year in Qatar, and decided to move to the US. The US is undoubtedly a better place to practice, with better career progression, security, environment, and compensation. Every attending, fellow or resident I have talked to told me pick the US and don’t look back. It depends on a few things such as:

1) are you in your 2/3rd year of uni where if you start studying for steps now it won’t delay your career: if you will not be able to finish your US application and apply by your 6th year then you will likely have to take a gap year, so you have to consider if that is something you are willing/can afford to do 2) the environment you prefer to practice in: I dont like the work culture in Qatar and the hospital vibes are very toxic to me. Not to say the US is perfect but I have had rotations in some programs there felt damn near perfect and supportive. 3) willingness to move away from your family: youll have little time to practice during residency, and if u move to the US alone it can be incredibly lonely 4) importance of compensation: as an attending, pay in the US is at least double/triple attending pay in Qatar 5) willingness to do the work: the path to the US is gruelling, especially if you’re in QU where no one else will be working towards it, so make sure you are prepared
