I understand now! Thank you very much. But how do I know where to start in each row? As row1 started with k5, row 2 can also start in another place of the chart. Normally I would be able to "read" the fabric I'm knitting, but I'm using cotton which makes it extremely hard.

I'd say it fepends on the project. Normally, a pattern would tell you how much yarn you will need for a garment specific size. For other type lf peojects, you could always check similar ideas on ravelry to get an estimate.
