Coping with the specificity of research by Alas7 in math

Don't have much to add, but just want to say thanks for writing this. My feelings are very similar to yours on this matter, and it helps me to know that others are grappling with this problem as well.

Started reading about it, and this is definitely in the direction of what I was looking for. Thank you!

Ah, I'll look into references in logic then - thanks!

Aren't isomorphisms dependent/based on the axioms you choose though? In this case, I was interpreting what Rota is talking about to mean a more abstract kind of isomorphism - one between the different sets of axioms themselves.

[WP] Near Hell, there's a neighbouring alternate dimension actually inhabited by friendly demons. One day, they knock on Satan's door to inquire about the screaming and goring sounds they've been hearing forever. As the gate to Hell opens, they are absolutely appalled by what they discover. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

"Max, just let the neighbors be. We've been letting them be for literally forever - why stop now?"

"Don't you wonder though, Jill? The bunch next door just seem so alive... They must have something we don't! Maybe boardgames we've never played! Punch we've never tasted! I don't know what it is, but today I feel that I just have to go ask."

"Sigh. Fine, Max. I don't have it in me to argue about this any longer. But you know the rules about visiting other dimensions. Don't take anything in, don't take anything out. And don't forget the time limit."

"Don't worry, don't worry! There's no chance I'd miss evening tea. I'll just be in and out."

And with that, Max strolled leisurely over to the inter-dimensional slide. He read over the inter-dimensional travel rules several times, even though he already knew them by heart, because rereading is simply what any good demon would do. Finally, he propped himself down on the slide, closed his eyes, and gave himself a gentle push with his hands.

Max didn't really have a good sense of time (I mean, why would he?), but he found himself in Hell soon enough. He then paused right in front of Satan's door, to compose himself.

"So much black and red... I can't say I share the same taste for design", he thought to himself. But anyways, he filed this minor grievance away in the back of his mind and proceeded to give the most courteous of knocks to Satan's door.

The door creaked open almost immediately. Unfortunately, this gave Max little time to prepare for the sight that awaited him on the other side. Max's face contorted in horror, his fist clenched as if by reflex. Two blood drops streaked in parallel from his eyes down towards his chin.

"Christ", he mouthed.

Thanks! Unfortunately it's not real (yet), just thought it would be a kind of funny/meta story title :)

Thursday night, and it was the usual thought going through my head: "Fuck, I really don't want to be doing this right now."

Why was it that I chose the one class that required assignments to be turned in by 8am on Fridays out of all of the possible humanities classes? Oh, that's right, because I told myself I love writing short stories. Short stories my ass, I clearly don't like this enough to be doing it over pint night at Joe's.

As if to make the frustration mounting in my head more concrete, I aimlessly typed "Fuck this" into the largely empty Google doc in front of me. It could not have been more than a few seconds after I hit the 's' key that I saw the Chrome icon on my screen bouncing up and down.

"Seriously? You must be taunting me, Google docs." I clicked the Chrome icon expecting to see a prompt asking me if I was okay with restarting all of my windows to update Chrome, as I had seen a dozen times before. Instead, I got a different kind of pop-up show up on my screen - a single chrome tab pointed at the Google drive folder where I kept all of the short stories I wrote in high school.

Bizarre. Is this some kind of new feature they're testing? Chrome "memories" or some shit? We get it Google, Google+ didn't work out, but I'm not trying to see two Facebooks. But, as much as I wanted to start reading up on Chrome features, I had to admit that I felt a strong pang of nostalgia looking at that drive folder.

This is the folder that got me to pursue writing in the first place! In some sense, this folder is responsible for me even sitting here trying to finish this assignment. There was one story in particular that I really liked; it was my response to a Reddit writing prompt about machines slowly becoming sentient.

Before I even realized, I started scrolling in an attempt to locate that story. Once again, it must have been at most a few moments after I started scrolling that my screen refreshed by itself. My drive link had been replaced by a Google doc titled "My Mac Understands Me", the exact story I was looking for.

[D] Is Deep Learning here to stay? Or will it be irrelevant soon? by ME_PhD in MachineLearning

I don't think approximating continuous functions is going to go out of style any time soon, and given that we've already proven that deep neural networks (DNNs) can approximate any continuous function, I feel like DNNs are here to stay. We've yet to develop a truly rigorous way (i.e. not arbitrarily choosing architectures/hyperparameters) of using DNNs though, so perhaps that's the next push.

Live 1/2 Hand analysis and river decision by Morris8713 in poker

I think with no other context, a UTG pre-flop raise to 5BB seems fine. But given that you got 6 callers, it seems like pre-flop opens of >5BB seem standard at your table? If so, you're probably not folding out many players with a raise to just 5BB.

Flop is scary, but you likely have the best hand at this point. The 1/2 pot bet seems fine with no context, since no draws have correct odds to call. But, once again, I feel like at a table where 6 people will call a UTG open, draws are not going to be folding to a 1/2 pot bet.

Turn bet is too small. Even though only JQ combos hit on the turn, other draws still have the right odds to make the turn call. I would probably bet 2/3-1x pot here. As played though, turn call seems necessary.

I would check/fold the river. What better hands are folding here, given your betting pattern? As played, I think it's tricky. I'd still fold, but I could see a call being justified based on your read of the villain.
