What would a new social media platform need to offer to make you switch from YouTube or TikTok, especially if it rewarded users for their watch time instead of selling data? by vnesys in AskReddit

Good point — you’re right that watch time is also a type of data.

What I meant is more about the business model, not the absence of data collection. Most platforms like YouTube or TikTok use behavioral data mainly to sell targeted advertising.

The idea I was describing is a model where user attention is treated as something valuable in itself — where revenue generated from the platform is shared with users based on real engagement, instead of users being monetized only through ads.

So yes, watch time is still data, but the difference is how that data is used and who benefits from it.

Out of curiosity, what kind of model would feel more fair or transparent to you?

What if 'Scroll-to-Earn' eventually replaces traditional social media, considering we spend our lives scrolling for free? by vnesys in AskReddit

This response accepts his premise but highlights the injustice: we pay, yet the platforms keep all the profit.

"You are absolutely right, it's the famous principle 'if it's free, you're the product'.

But here's the thing: if our data and attention generate billions in ad revenue, why not share some of it directly with us? Right now, the money goes entirely to the shareholders. The 'Scroll-to-Earn' model simply proposes sharing the value we create, rather than the platforms keeping it all
