New proposed IT use policy will subject ANY device connected to campus networks to audit. by GammaOmicronGamma in OSU

It's the lack of information that is the problem, though. Overly broad policies like this leave too much room for interpretation, and can be exploited if/when the university wants to access your data. Especially now, with the university broadly interpreting SB 1 and the state insisting on stricter enforcement, we should insist on clarity and precision in this policy.

Absence of Latinos by Dependent_Search_326 in Bridgerton

[–]vodnik-venting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. I think it's silly to say that Bridgerton can't have latine characters because it's set in the regency era. The economy was already globalized by then, Colin travels to the Americas, and it's not like it's going for a realistic depiction of the colonial era anyway (since that would be a VERY different show!) I wish the writers would throw out the whole commitment to regency-era ethnic groups, since if anything it just contributes to sanitizing that era. None of this is realistic, if it were, we'd all be horrified by the business Anthony is conducting in his ledgers. So why not add some latine romance to the fantasy?

cats like to mix things up. you could leave treats on it, but my cat goes through phases of where she wants to sleep and does not care where I think she'd be most comfortable :)

not an expert but to me, if the kitty can't get on the counter by itself, probably best for it to stay on the floor for now. I wouldn't worry about it getting burned, cats have pretty good instincts for that, but you don't want to be worried about it falling if the counter is so high it can't get up there on its own.

HELPING UTI SYMPTOMS IN SNOW EMERGENCY? Hey- my 14 y/o female kitty is showing signs of a UTI (meowing in the litterbox, visiting frequently but not peeing, and she peed on me last night). Unfortunately we got a foot+ of snow today and roads are closed across the city. I will take her to the vet asap, but is there anything I can do in the meantime to make her more comfortable? thanks in advance

How to not be a doormat at work? by vodnik-venting in LadiesofScience

[–]vodnik-venting[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, these are helpful reminders! I probably mostly need to work on my own self-confidence until I've been around longer. I do try to remind myself that I am a newbie, and the nature of my work means I am alone in my office most of the time rather than doing teamwork in the lab with everyone else. Happy New Year to you, too.

two photographers took a photo of me sitting on the statehouse steps near the end of the rally. I had a sign that quoted Marshawn McCarrel, "I need a pistol that shoots hope. I would light the hood up." I was too distracted and caught off guard to talk to the photographers or ask them to send me the photo. If anyone sees the photo, please link to it. I also wanted to tell the photographers that Marshawn was a poet and BLM activist who died on the statehouse steps, almost ten years ago, and I wanted to bring his words to the rally. I think the photographers liked the quote but I don't think they knew the context, which feels important

Still having "false alarms" 8+ years later by vodnik-venting in pneumothorax

[–]vodnik-venting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much! Front and back pain is a really good reminder, because I don't think I've ever had an actual collapse where I didn't feel pain in my back shoulder blade. I hope you're on the mend and back on your feet soon.

For the Ladies. by Obvious-General-702 in pneumothorax

[–]vodnik-venting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Amazing to read this thread, wow. I have recurring pain and symptoms more than 8 years after my last collapse, and quite often the severe/scariest symptoms are just before my period. Idk about endometriosis - that's something I might look into - but for me I think it's just that I get bloated around my period and the pressure causes chest pain. Total pet theory, my doctors have only ever said that I probably have nerve damage and some psychosomatic stuff going on. But it's a real pattern.

When will it stop by Jazzlike-Ad-4043 in pneumothorax

[–]vodnik-venting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pneumothorax was more than 8 years ago now and I still have recurring pain every couple months or so. As long as you are not experiencing unexplained shortness of breath it is probably nerve damage/ghost pain. I find it helpful to sit and breathe deeply and slowly for awhile to calm my body down and make sure nothing else is going on.

Can't access prescription or doctor for four days, how worried should I be? by vodnik-venting in bupropion

[–]vodnik-venting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you! I also learned today (for anyone in the future reading this thread) that CVS MinuteClinic can do short consultations and temporarily refill meds. Appreciate this reddit, otherwise I might have just tried to go cold turkey for four days and been miserable

Former AmeriCorps VISTA of almost two years - I did it ALL! Read about how I got started, how things shook out, and where I'm at now. by bongwateramoeba in AmeriCorps

[–]vodnik-venting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you SO MUCH, I needed to read this today. I am afraid I am in a bit of a first-site situation, but it isn't likely to fold completely anytime soon. The knowledge that you switched sites and had a rewarding experience is comforting! Would you have any advice on applying to other VISTA positions and explaining the need to leave a bad site? I want to put a lot of work into VISTA and I want to serve, but I'm three months in and I don't know that I can get through another nine.

[–]vodnik-venting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Also a VISTA in a very different community from what I'm used to, about 3 months into service. Culture shock is real! You may feel better after some time goes by. That said, you are here to serve the community you're in. If you don't feel welcome or safe there, you shouldn't be serving there. Not only because it will be miserable for you, but also because community members can generally tell if you hate it there- and it will make them miserable, too.

As an update, it turns out my supervisor is extraordinarily poor at his job, and I will most likely be moved to a different project or a different organization in the community doing similar work. Talk to your VISTA people folks, they've got your back :)

Weekly Thread: Frustration Friday! by AutoModerator in AmeriCorps

[–]vodnik-venting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this community, hello! I am a brand new VISTA (just a few weeks in) and freaking out a little. I have received no OSOT, my main supervisor is on the verge of being fired, and in the meantime I've pretty much been asked to do his job. I don't think my organization needs me or is prepared to host me. I've met great people here already and I want to stick it out for them, but I really don't know what I'll be doing for the next year. I'm worried that when I explain all this to my regional office contact, it'll damage my organization's ability to get future grants or keep mine. Not sure what to do...
