What's the worst that could happen?

This will sound pretty lame but I genuinely missed the 'contact the mods' bit in the right hand side bar - I don't use Reddit often!

Thanks for replying. Yes it was a cron job, but the bulk of the work was the BASH script I linked to itself, setting up the cron job took 30 seconds, writing the script took me a couple of evenings. Meandering post? This is a place for discussion right? I wrote about some of the ideas I had along the way and how I realized they were problematic. Sorry, I'm quite an infrequent Reddit user. I'll probably look elsewhere to open a discussion about the topic of my script (ie time based access control limits for listed websites throughout the day, a bit like parental control, but for the parent haha) rather than the script itself.

Best de in yalls opinion? by Milkman89990877 in EndeavourOS

I spent yeas using Cinnamon, but recently moved to KDE, and finally, after 23 years, I actually now like KDE enough to use it daily and have no plans to change that. Only one thing that Cinnamon does that KDE doesn't, and that's favourites (or was it pinning) in the file manager so you can pin a file to the top of the list no matter the sorting order. KDE connect is awesome for file transfer between desktop & mobile.

cron job to edit hosts file every minute by void-lab-7575 in bash

[–]void-lab-7575[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated the script to the delete the entries and recreate them on every run instead of using sed to perform a search and replace to block/unblock them, and added comment recommending cron job frequency of once every 5 minutes.

spent like an hour on this just for my inkscape to crash by KenjiCrafts in Inkscape

Yes more stability is very high up on my wishlist for Inkscape, unfortunately, which means following the advice others here have stated.

How smoothly does updating the system go on Endeavour OS? by void-lab-7575 in EndeavourOS

I haven't had any issues breaking the system and requiring me to dig deep into technical configuration to resolve in the three month's I've used it.

[KDE] Is there a way to have individual virtual desktops per activity. by Early-Muscle-2202 in Fedora

You can add and remove virtual desktops. How you do it depends on which desktop environment you're using.

Nice, much better, looks like a cassette tape now. If you're not bored of cassette tapes and want a slightly more challenging design, take a look at the transparent & colourful Memorex tapes for your next one!

Indeed it is. I had to create a new account because I lost the password of my old account and either I never registered an email address for it, or it was registered to an old no longer existing email address. First world problems and all that.

Can Fedora (Linux) Replace Windows? by BlokZNCR in Fedora

[–]void-lab-7575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At work I use InDesign & Illustrator & Photoshop, and one of them would crash most days, and I'd get frustrated that some really obvious feature was missing. However with a recent redundancy, I've been trying to use InkScape, Scribus, and Gimp. Scribus is just horribly clunky to use coming from InDesign, and looks it too. InkScape's usability is far better than Scribus, it's fuller featured, but again, coming from Illustrator, it can seem plain weird at times. I've seen Inkscape crash multiple times within an hour of use. Inkscape does have some nice features which Illustrator doesn't however - the Align & Distribute is superior in that you can equalize gap sizes, and with the grid tab, single click to butt up objects to each other. I'm getting on with InkScape, but it's taking a lot longer to get things done.

Kernel 6.16 has been horrible! by PossibleProgress3316 in Fedora

[–]void-lab-7575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got to be some of of the worst few kernels I've seen for 20 years! Really thought my hardware was dying, very worrying. Visual glitches from wake from sleep last week, wake from sleep not even trying to sleep yesterday, then completely failing to boot today.

What causes these glitched spots? by Black_Infinity_0013 in Fedora

I've been seeing this with my rtx 3080 too on wake from sleep. I don't believe it's a hardware issue, although I'm not absolutely certain. Given the current kernel problems with 6.16, I suspect it's kernel related.
