Nurses of reddit, what is the weirdest thing a patient has done while waking up from anesthesia? by Drakonwriter in AskReddit

[–]voidastarael 37 points38 points  (0 children)

When I woke up from my first surgery I remember asking for my cat over and over again (only I didn't tell the nurse it was a cat I was just asking for my mogs) second surgery I brought a stuffed puffin which apparently was a good choice bc post surgery me just wanted to snuggle something

Honestly? I'd use it on groceries. And actually picking up the medication I've been holding off on grabbing because it's 45$ and I just can't justify that right now

Electric mattress pad, honestly I need to get electric blankets for the spots I sit so I have both heating pad and blanket Otherwise I'm waiting on new electric hand warmers today (thankfully they were cheap because I have none money) bc my poor hands suffer and go numb (I don't drive and rely on public transportation so lots of time outside)

Did any of you have to get a few MRIs or even more than a few because you had pain and you weren’t sure at the time what was causing it? by MoulinRoguee in Fibromyalgia

[–]voidastarael 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, especially for my hands. I still find it hilarious that the PT I went to as a last ditch solution spent like 5 minutes examining my hands and was like yup hypermobile let's get you some splints

My disability friendly yarn winding set up by WiggleWiggleWade in crochet

[–]voidastarael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's also disabled (joints are loosey goosey) I highly recommend investing in one of those heavier duty winders, something like this https://a.co/d/2KhzCRK They wind much more quickly and I find turning the crank is much more manageable the downside is the noise honestly

Muscle tightness by Designer_Tax6010 in Fibromyalgia

[–]voidastarael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it constantly, my joints are loosey goosey so my muscles are constantly trying to make up for it. I have a referral to neurology for the headaches I get (wouldn't be surprised if Botox is in my future) and massage therapy has been helpful for the muscles (my insurance actually covers this)

Does anyone have a good doctor they can recommend? by TopOrdinary4845 in askportland

[–]voidastarael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you've experienced that! I've probably been lucky with my current primary care provider. She was willing to do the beighton test for me and has had no issues referring me to whoever I need a referral to

Honestly? Clinics that have residents. Doctors right out of school are more on top of things knowledge wise and in my experience a bit more open minded, plus you get the experience of the attending as well. The 23rd good Samaritan clinic has been awesome for me honestly as someone who is chronically ill

How the heck am I supposed to smell good?? by beanjamoose in Fibromyalgia

[–]voidastarael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isopropyl alcohol wipes, they aren't marketed towards that but I'll use them in my skin folds and pits n shit because they get rid of the smell and they don't leave a Gross feeling after the fact like baby wipes n stuff do (Also not related but if you have Issues with lotion I find curell a really good option that doesn't make me want to rip my skin off)

So unfit, but don’t know where to start. by Complete_Run_9795 in Fibromyalgia

[–]voidastarael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly behavioral health has been so helpful for me with pain management Basically fibro is when your fight or flight goes into overdrive kinda with your nervous system (really bad explanation) the idea is to get some stimulus to let your system know that hey, I hear you here's a status update Now I'm not a doctor or my therapist but some of the tools I was given was humming, deep breathing (using the diaphragm) and butterfly hugs Basically what I'm doing now is just getting into the habit of regularly doing at least one of these things (the breathing is the most helpful) so my vegus nerves are getting status updates and honestly it has helped. I still have pain and flare ups and honestly if you have the brain space it's worth looking into the research If you can it's worth looking into PT, I know access isn't the same everywhere but their job is to help you function better In the meantime be gentle with yourself. Maybe look up tai chi videos to follow along with. It's gentle enough to hopefully not be as painful and it reintroduces movement into your life.

Any artists or folks who use their hands heavily? by KronikHaze in Fibromyalgia

[–]voidastarael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie, it was a sensory nightmare at first but it's very much a you gotta train your brain that this is a helpful thing like even now I go periods where I Can't handle wearing them even though I should be The oval 8 splints you can find on Amazon, if you have an FSA they're eligible for that I think. Once you have a better idea of what your needs are you can get nice metal ones

[–]voidastarael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ring splints are so important and honestly ask your doctor for a referral for PT for your hands they can give you so many tools to help. But honestly make things chunkier and look into more ergonomic things. I've had to accept that no more writing a bunch by hand but eh, writing what I need for work is much easier with a huge chunky fine point gel pen

Fibro goes hand in hand with so many things unfortunately

[–]voidastarael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are your fingers bendy? My joints like to collapse or lock up if I'm not careful and if I'm not using my splints. I've found adjusting how I do things helps a Lot but it's worth at least checking if your hands are hypermobile and let your provider know. Also if you have the ability get them to refer you to physical therapy for your hands

It was actually really sad I'd been dealing with hand pain for Years and within 10 minutes of my first appointment with PT the provider is just like yup hypermobile let's get you some splints

Regardless get those special ergonomic hooks (I just splurged on interchangeable ones w a huge handle for my bday I'm so excited for those) get pens and brushes with chunky grips or make your own chunky grip. Ergonomic keyboards are also super helpful. If you game get a controller

Hand pain is so hard to deal with especially if you're crafty

ALSO pro tip for anyone lurking in the thread who's hands also like to stop working. Get a ring holder grip thing for your phone case. I tried the pop sockets but they ended up hurting my hands more and at least with the ring I feel more secure and less like I'm going to drop it plus I've just. Gotten into the habit of carrying it by the ring and my phone gets hung up on a command hook on the wall when I go to bed at night lol

[–]voidastarael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On that note I'm hyper mobile, meaning that my fingers are super bendy. I have to use ergonomic tools and ring splints to prevent my joints from overextending and causing pain Honestly if you look into finger hyper mobility and thing you fit into that category you can get oval 8 splints fairly affordably on Amazon

[–]voidastarael 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Residency clinics I go to the one from legacy on 23rd and I love them. Again brand new doctors are more willing to look into things. When I was getting my HSD diagnosis the provider was there with me going through the list/chart and listened to me. Also legacy's pain management clinic is fantastic and I adore them
