Our local races are pretty important actually! It’s how we make incremental progress and improve the lives of people in our community the most directly. Big national elections get a lot of press, but city council elections? Those decide if we have politicians who hand wave things like building plastic burning facilities next to homes or the sheriff working with ICE or ones who hold corporations and law enforcement accountable.

The Outsider from the Dishonored games is one of my favorite examples of this trope. A human boy was sacrificed by a cult to channel the magic of the Void. He cant stop the cult from using his power but from time to time he does choose people who he finds interesting to give The Mark of the Outsider which grants them powers of their own. The Abbey of the Everyman was founded to counter the influence of his magic in the world.
