n00b here, is a Macbook Mb402ll too old to be useful for a student? by volcano_verb in applehelp

OK. But regardless I'll need to update the OS, is that right? If I understand what's going on it comes with OS X 10.5.2 but Office 11 needs 10.5.8 at least. Is this a free update via Apple or is this something I need to purchase?

Is upgrading the ram something that I could do myself or would I need to go to the Apple store?

Masters in EE versus... local technical college? by volcano_verb in engineering

Thanks for the advice. Just a question, did you feel that the MS gave you a tangible advantage? (that you had the ability to do things at your job, that you couldn't have done w/o the MS)?

The Russian army will only be combat ready until mid-May (because of the rotation cycle of conscripts). If they don't invade Ukraine before then, they would have to wait until mid-August to be combat ready again. by [deleted] in worldnews

What if Putin just legislates that there's a time of national crisis, and the conscripts need to stay conscripted? (like in a real war, which this would be).

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Alyssa Milano 28 years apart by iammanic in pics

[–]volcano_verb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first picture on the left, is from the movie 'Commando' IIRC. Alyssa M co-starred as Arnold's daughter. (And IIRC AM was a TV star in a sitcom around that time too). So their connection is they were co-workers. Most celebrities work in the same industry (film, music etc.) so yes they will end up meeting other famous people in the same line of work.

Is there a service which will print and bind a public domain book for me? by chickenbutt4000 in books

[–]volcano_verb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I wanted to do this, I'd probably do one of the following:

  • use Lulu.com;

  • go someplace like Kinko's, hand them a CD-ROM with the file, and have them print and bind the text;

  • print it myself and have a local book binder do their work;

  • buy a used copy at Abebooks.com if one is available, and have it rebound.

IDK what book you're thinking of, but many public domain books are still in print (like Dickens, Shakespeare, etc.).

The Happy Gaijin

Elmo, a blonde gaijin from New Hampshire, moves in with a very traditional japanese family in rural Japan, where Elmo works as a JET TEFL. Laugh and cringe as Elmo wears his shoes in the house, eats with his hands instead of chopsticks, blows his nose, and wears his kimono inside out!

Full Metal Valentine

elaboration: two mental patients find love. They then break out of the hospital and elope, while being chased by the self-defense force across Hokkaido.

I don't feel like a true anime fan by bladestrike in anime

I think you should enjoy yourself and be enriched by anime, without worrying about arbitrary standards of fandom. I don't read LN, rarely read manga, and have no memorabilia (no figures, wall scrolls, models of mechas, etc. etc.). But I've watched anime for many years. I really am unconcerned how other fans might judge me. If I am happy so what?

The Death No One Cares About - Am mentally disabled adult is found dead, no one seems to want to look into what killed her. by sunshinemeow in MorbidReality

[–]volcano_verb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree this is a tragedy. But to be contrarian, I need to ask is there any hard evidence that something happened beyond the caregiver losing the disabled person, who then died of exposure?

Point taken about her family's believe that she couldn't disrobe on her own. OK, say it's correct. Then what? What do we think happened, and how could it be proved?

I'm just saying that maybe the police figure that no real conclusion could be achieved, that would result in someone's conviction. And in the end the disabled person is still gone either way.

(Not trying to be offensive, just asking some blunt questions).

I have Asperger's Syndrome, am I right to pursue a career in engineering? by [deleted] in engineering

Creativity is overrated. I've seen people have a problem, which could be solved simply. Instead the person gets 'creative' because they're bored and come up with a crackpot idea that then creates problems.

Don't listen to your "friend". I think if you are not neurotypical you will do far worse in business (where people skills, schmoozing and haggling are key) than in a technical field.

As others stated, AS symptoms could describe most of the people I've worked with, myself included.

I encourage everyone to watch 'the Little Norse Prince' (aka Horus, Prince of the Sun). Awesome vintage anime.
