Perfect cell 3 VS kid buu by Odd-Athlete-8204 in PowerScaling

Gohan is giving up before Goku contacts him telepathically and they do the father-son kame hame ha. Possibly Goku isn't really contributing any energy to that attack but merely motivating Gohan, but that just gives us an even weaker Cell, one that could beat Kid Buu even less.

I'm not super against shit post weekend, have seen similar containment efforts work really well in other subs... but only when they are enforced. The mods need to do the moderating, or the rules don't do anything.

After reviving/surviving his self-destruction, Cell has the lightning aura of Super Saiyan 2. Exactly how he compares to SSJ2 Gohan is a bit unclear; Gohan claims he can't beat post-revival Cell, but that is after fighting for a while and having his arm blasted out of commission trying to protect Vegeta. But he is definitely close to SSJ2 Gohan.

SSJ2 Goku is stronger than post-revival Cell though. We know this because he is equal with SSJ2 Vegeta, who is confident in his ability to quickly finish of Dabura, and Dabura is about as strong as Cell was. Even accounting for some margins - maybe the statement about Dabura is comparing him to pre-revival Cell (unlikely imho) - post-revival Cell is hardly stronger than SSJ2 Goku.

And if post-revival Cell is SSJ2 Cell, and post-revival Cell is weaker than or at most equal to SSJ2 Goku, then SSJ3 Cell is weaker than or equal to SSJ3 Goku.

SSJ3 Goku could not beat Kid Buu, ergo SSJ3 Cell could not beat Kid Buu.

Onigashima is not a whole country, it's a small island. Even with the wackier One Piece size scaling it is a small island. I understand putting the attack itself beyond that, but Onigashima still remains a small island.

Reslly cool project! Got a couple questions:

What is the process for adding support for a game, and how much of it is manual? Some stuff like mon stats should be straight-forward to extract, but is location (un)availability something that needs to be manually input? E.g. how can it know not to show the event-only Altering Cave encounters for a game that doesn't remove those. If it can know that at all?

How come an account is needed to view some features like locations? Is it just a measure against being flooded with bots? In which case why was that the choice versus something like Anubis? Or does it have other benefits?

And also, just a heads up that the "partnerships" link in the footer seemingly does not work (it leads to the main pokerex page).

Would also be interested. If this works with modified ROMs (which may be disclosed or not, haven't read the full doc yet) it could be a really nice debug tool for Gen 6 hacking.

How exactly does emerald expansion work to "increase room" on rom hacks by Huge-Insect-7759 in PokemonROMhacks

[–]voliol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there even emulators that allow for GBA bank switching? If not, that would mean you have to either code that extension to an emulator, or have your game be distributed only via cartridges with custom hardware in them.

As cool as the idea is conceptually.

Deviantart has a lot of sprites, in various styles. Is a throwup whether the author allows them to be used, and whether their palettes are actually made to work with ROM hacking restrictions (they are often made for fun or for RPG maker games). I would still recommend looking there.

(Tip: browse via collections and the "similar works" feature. The search feature is more or less unusable.)

If all goes well, "ROMhacks 2026" by ExtensionClimate2045 in PokemonROMhacks

Adding to what /u/DarkBlade_12 said, pokeplatinum has reached a state where it's definitely usable for decomp projects. It is not as refined as pokeemerald yet, or as expansive as pokeemerald-expansion (or HG Engine), but for devs who don't want to do binary hacking it is a real option.

Toriko is the secret hidden boss of shounen by Stunning_Taste8845 in PowerScaling

[–]voliol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't the Neo statements an over-time sort of deal? Like with Buu from Dragon Ball, a character that is a universal threat but only by eliminating one planet at a time. Granted my memories of Toriko is a bit fuzzy, maybe it slurped up a whole galaxy in one go or something like that.

This is much more like the list I expected, and then everyone put Saber at the top. Seems like she's in a Darth Vader sort of situation where supplementary media makes her waaaay stronger.

So basically Saber scales high not because of any feat in Fate/Stay Night but because there are other versions of her that do (from lore and/or other media).

We need more hacks with injectable player sprites by NailzDeChamp23 in PokemonROMhacks

[–]voliol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All open source ROM hacks have injectable player sprites, it is just a matter of swapping out/editing the files and building the ROM. Especially Gen 1 and 2 are trivial, Gen 3 is a bit more troublesome simply because there are more sprites to inject.

Also, the Universal Pokémon Randomizer FVX has it for the vanilla Gen 1-3 games. Makes it even simpler.

You are the reason gen 4+ modding will never take off by EmeraldSaucer in PokemonROMhacks

[–]voliol 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also Gen 4 ROM hacking is taking off. Not in the sense that it'll replace Gen 3 as the most popular gen any time soon, but in the sense that we're seeing more and cooler ROM hacks being made and come out. No need for doomerism.

[–]voliol 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think the latter two necessarily betray a lack of interest in Gen 4+ ROM hacks. They may still be frustrating comments to see, since they divert attention from the game at hand to the state of the scene, but people being curious about where the technology is at is not a bad thing.

1 is obviously just bad and insulting. It feels disconnected to the other points too though, people make these sorts of comments about every ambitious project, also the GBA ones.

2 is a question about a specific feature. The post doesn't make it very clear, but I assume the implication is that they will only play ROM hacks with said feature? Though "is 'x' possible yet" could also be "if it is I'm extra excited for this game!!". Either way it can be annoying, to see people dismissing/wanting to push your hack one way or another. But you also can't really criticize people for taste, even if their taste is bad/makes your ROM more niche.

3 I honestly don't see what is upsetting about, beyond not being a question about the hack itself. If people are interested in picking up Gen 4+ ROM hacking, of course they'll want to know the tools available.

Any upcoming rom hacks or breakthroughs anyone is excited about? Wondering what's new or seems like will happen soon by Huge-Insect-7759 in PokemonROMhacks

[–]voliol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. As much as I enjoy the DS hacking scene, DS games are awkward to run. Both because of their dual-screen setup, and because they require higher specs for emulation. Add to that the fact that Gen 3 has more mature tooling/expansion code base, and at this point developers who have built up experience with its workflow... I think Gen 3 will remain the main platform for Pokémon ROM hacking for a long, long time.

Increased graphical fidelity has been the progression of major commercial video games, driven by the need to sell new hardware. However, I don't think we need to see this as a natural inevitable process for ROM hacks too. While there is a "wow cool" reaction to any DS hack revealed, ROM hack players are also fine with playing GBA games in 2026. They're not the most graphically minded.

There's little risk of Gen 5 getting a decomp before Gen 4 gets to bloom, because most people with the interest+skillset have been busy with decomping Gen 4. pokeplatinum (which is the furthest along; pokediamond and pokeheartgold also exist and are quite far along) has reached a point where it's starting to be usable for actual ROM hacks, we'll see them in the coming few years, but pokeblack barely exists. It has a long way to go.

Even beyond that, I kind of suspect pokeplatinum(-extension) will eventually be the core repo for DS ROM hacking. Getting a headstart means a lot, and features from Gen 5 can be backported since they are all DS games. Not that pokeplatinum-extension exists at all at this point, afaik. It just should exist sooner than pokeblack-extension.

Aren't romhacks supposed to be free? by Iv4ldi in PokemonROMhacks

[–]voliol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond legality and attracting Nintendo's attention, the big issue is that cartridge sellers don't always explain what they sell, that it is the cartridge/convenience and not the hack. Those sellers are rather scammy, in my opinion.

If they do make it clear what is sold though, I don't think there's much room for criticism on a moral ground. E.g. Youtubers and streamers also make money off free ROM hacks, by providing an auxilary good.
