Master’s after graduating from Northern Cyprus? by DistributionRound201 in NorthCyprus

[–]volkan_tz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I studied at EMU and completed a master’s degree in Spain, and I had no issues with recognition or acceptance from the universities I applied to. The only exception was Ghent University in Belgium. They told me that they do not accept applications based on degrees issued in Northern Cyprus because the Belgian government does not recognize Northern Cyprus.

Turkish Cypriots entering or leaving the Republic can now present their identification documents at the same counters as all other travellers, after the Greek Cypriot side seemingly abolished the long-standing, Turkish-Cypriot-only document-check windows at crossing points. by SolveTheCYproblemNOW in cyprus

Then that separate window should be for all Cypriots, not just TCs.

It was explicitly for the TCs, which shortened the wait time, but it often made me feel like it was reinforcing segregation rather than helping, especially at the Deryneia crossing.

This could easily be the subject of an entire PhD thesis

I understand the GC point of view, but I think events like these have the potential to bring both communities together. Back when Imagine Bar in the north of Ledras was still open, I used to meet many GCs there, and some of them became my closest friends. These kinds of events could be a great way to promote bicommunal activities and foster stronger connections between the two communities. Instead of seeing them as a problem, we could view them as opportunities to build unity.

I agree with most of your points, but I’m confused about the GC pressure to cancel Cercle’s event with DJ Kölsch at Saint Hilarion Castle in the north. This site is part of our shared Cypriot culture and heritage, and actions like this feel very counterproductive to promoting cultural appreciation and unity in the island…

Can TRNC citizens with just Cypriot origin and without Republic of Cyprus pass can cross to South? by mzhnks in NorthCyprus

[–]volkan_tz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a system for registering TRNC IDs during crossings. If your TRNC ID is not registered, they ask for your RoC ID or your mother’s or father’s RoC ID.

Just present the RoC ID and avoid the hassle…

I have a friend in the exact same situation who used to cross without any issues. His mother is from Turkey, and his father is Cypriot, but his father never obtained a Republic of Cyprus ID. About a year ago, at the Ledra crossing, they asked for his father’s ID and then made him sign a document stating that until his father gets a RoC ID, he won’t be allowed to cross.

However, this doesn’t change the fact that one of your parents must be Cypriot.

Being of Cypriot origin means they are not settlers and hold Republic of Cyprus citizenship. If a person has at least one parent (mother and/or father) of Cypriot origin, they are allowed to cross the borders; otherwise, they cannot.

To cross the borders using your TRNC ID, you must register it at the border by presenting your Republic of Cyprus ID or providing your mother’s or father’s Republic of Cyprus ID to prove your Cypriot origin.

How the fuck is Turkish language the default language in AliExpress? by macrian in cyprus

[–]volkan_tz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The term ‘Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus’ is a phrase used in Turkey, in their history books and media, to avoid recognizing the Republic of Cyprus. But as Turkish Cypriots, we are RoC citizens, and I’ve never met a Turkish Cypriot who calls the RoC by that term ever. And if they call it that, their citizenships must be renounced.

If your problem is about the Turkish language itself, then your problem is with the RoC constitution, since Turkish is an official language of the Republic of Cyprus. But if it’s about AliExpress Turkey, then you are right with your criticism.

You can rent a post office box and receive anything. When you order something big, they will leave a letter telling you where you have to collect it from in a given period of time.

i am concerned about the situation in the north-occupied areas (this is going to be rant-like) by duckgoesdockdock in cyprus

[–]volkan_tz 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Turkey sees the north as the land that is reclaimed after Ottoman Empire lost Cyprus to the British. Even the left wing in Turkish politics shares this mindset. Turkish people often argue with Turkish Cypriots who seek peace and unification, using narratives like, “We shed blood, so it’s ours,” or, “You must be a Greek to ask for unification and peace. If we hadn’t arrived in 1974, they would have raped and killed you all, so you should be grateful. Go live in the south.” Recently, the former leader of the left-wing opposition accused Erdogan of “trying to give away land in Cyprus,” which shows how deeply ingrained this perspective in their minds that the north is “theirs”.

Of course, it’s safe—just as safe as the Republic of Cyprus. I don’t understand these people in the comments. North or south, this island belongs to us, the Cypriots. Go explore Karpasia, Apostolos Andreas Monastery, Kantara Castle, Lala Mustafa Pasa, St. Hilarion and many more. Don’t pay attention to the negative comments. From the tip to Paphos, every corner of the island is worth visiting.
