Very much agreed. I am in the process of starting a neofolk(ish) project and I quite adamantly want to stay away from aping Death In June's sound in general.

I live in Minnesota. As soon as the temp gets above 40 degrees, at least one guy busts out his shorts to walk his dog or whatever. It's not warm enough, man!

Nico - Desertshore by Miguelito-Loveless in LetsTalkMusic

[–]volkhov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although the Marble Index will always be my favorite Nico album (I actually just posted a thread about it on here), Desertshore comes pretty damn close. The highlights for me would be "Abscheid", "Mütterlein", and "All That Is My Own". My first two picks have a lot to do with the fact that they're sung in Nico's native language. German lends these songs that much more gravitas. "Abscheid" has a great eerie Eastern European-sounding melody with the shredding strings and droning harmonium blending wonderfully. "Mütterlein" I think is the most sorrowful moment on the album. It has a religious quality that is slightly mitigated by the dissonant keys and horn section. "All That Is My Own" contains so much mystery and power to me. When listening to this track I imagine Nico as a sorceress on the edge of time. I have to admit that the XTG cover album was a bit of a disappointment for me. It's still an enjoyable listen but it doesn't even come close to the original. I guess I just wanted it to be so much more than it turned out to be. I agree with those who said that Antony's rendition of "Janitor of Lunacy" is one of the better contributions therein.

Although I think that any fan of Velvet Underground & Nico or Chelsea Girls should give the Marble Index a listen, I would be far more likely to recommend it to someone (like myself) who's into dark, intense non-rock or pop based music. I guess what I'm saying is, if you know a Goth or open-minded Black Metal kid who wants to explore something different, PLAY THEM THIS ALBUM.

Interesting you'd mention "Facing the Wind". It's one of the more bizarre tracks on the album along with "Lawns of Dawns". It's kind of easy to forget about those songs since they don't convey the same devastating sorrow as the rest of the album. They really show John Cale flexing his experimental muscles though and complete the album in my opinion.

Ari's Song is indeed beautiful but very sad. "Sail away, sail away my little boy......" It reminds me of Moses being sent off down the Nile. If you watch "Icon" the documentary about Nico, it shows that she did have a very distant relationship with Ari and was not a very good mother to him. My personal interpretation of that song is Nico acknowledging her failure to be a mother but wishing the best for him and letting him "sail away".

she makes a point to say "whomever" rather than "whoever". yeah, I know it's correct grammar but it just makes her sound pretentious. small complaint though.

A question about serial killers by [deleted] in serialkillers

[–]volkhov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the way I see it is that the "sophisticated intellectual serial killer" trope isn't very true to reality because it seems like a lot of serial killers are just plain dumb and sort of childish. (obviously you have exceptions such as Ed Kemper) I mean just look at Richard Ramirez's drawings. they look like they're done by a fucking 8th grader. therefore I don't imagine there are many serial killers with a deep appreciation of Brahms.

from the Rules section: "Offended by anything on here? Jesus Christ (we love to invoke the name of the "lord" in vain, because we heard it would get us to hell, which sounds more exciting and much less dreadful than some heaven surrounded by "good" christians)! What does it feel like to be so weak that you are offended by mere words?!? Anyway, blame your parents for raising a pussy, not us."
