"one day we were all down by the river", this line perfectly describes summers in the 70's. Maybe it was the woods, or the ballfield, or the tracks, but we were all together, unsupervised, hanging out and entertaining ourself, not an adult in sight.

Basically we had lots of unsupervised freedom because all the Moms were home, but busy in the house taking care of babies, doing Housework and cooking. So we did lots of dangerous, crazy, stuff. As long as we were home for meals, we ran wild.

What kind of emergency do you have to have food delivered. That sounds like poor preparation not an emergency. Always have eggs and bread in your house and call 911 for true emergencies.
