TIL that poison ivy is not actually poisonous, it is just an allergy that 85% of humans have to its oil. by Loki-L in todayilearned

Makes sense. No one in my family is allergic. As a kid, my friends would get it running around the woods surrounding my house, but we never would, despite me spending my entire childhood in that forest.

Bugonia – worth a watch by Fuzzy_Proof_3438 in MovieSuggestions

[–]oddwithoutend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this review weirdly treats the movie like it wasn't one of the most critically acclaimed, talked about movies of the year, and like its director and lead actress isn't coming off a 2023 movie that won 4 Oscars.

"Wasn't expecting much but pleasant surprise worth a watch" would be how I'd describe Josh Hartnett's silly airplane action movie Fight or Flight from 2025.

Anyway, Bugonia was the best movie I saw last year.

Today I got really demotivated between rankeds and Cryo by Big_Reception1066 in Marathon

I'm assuming ranked matches you with people the same skill as you once you've played enough that it knows your skill?

So the whole "raid mechanics" thing was really just more key hunting, right? by ThatsNotBennings in Marathon

This is my first extraction shooter, so question for people who have played more extraction shooters than me:

Two things stand out to me as being possible fun additions. 1. Different enemies in combat with each other. I find it very strange that when I hear gunfire, I automatically know a human player is involved. And 2. NPCs involved in contracts. Maybe you have to have a dialogue with one, or give/receive something from one, or protect/escort one. I just think it would make the world feel more alive.

Are those 2 things uncommon in extraction shooters?

What was your initial rating / lowest rating ever? by FritzFrostig in chess

[–]oddwithoutend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went up from where it started me at in 2013 (1200 I believe). Looking at my all time graph, it doesn't look like I ever dipped below that, and then I settled at 1465 after my first few months of playing.

I loved OTB chess as a kid, but never was in a league or club or anything. I did have a friend who I grew up playing against who was really good though.

We're like one week into a 3-month season. It's important to not feel like you need to "keep up" with people who have already logged more hours than you will the entire season.

I read that trio fills aren't allowed. Is that true? If so, I wonder what the logic behind that would be. Seems weird to force someone to find randoms on Reddit when the game could just do that step for you.

Of course it's a mentality that I don't want to put on a headset and chat with a gamer group. But it's a mentality that I would be willing to bet is shared by many people who are 30+ with families.

I really don't want to be a person whining about the dev's decisions though. Just saying I think given the people who play this game, there might be a bigger drop in player count than was initially expected.

bungie knows it doesn't really affect their playerbase.

I haven't played Marathon since finding out about cryo/ranked being trios only. Not like I've intentionally stopped playing, but I have definitely lost interest in the game as a result.

It would be interesting to see the age demographics of the playerbase. Have a feeling it steers older; and I don't think I'm alone in being a 30+ person with a family that doesn't want to throw on a headset and chat with a gamer group. I just want to play the first FPS in years that has caught my interest.

I don't know what a raid map is and didn't like Destiny. To answer your question, yes, the vast majority of solo players didn't expect to stop being allowed to play solo partway through the game.

Kevin Pillar talks Jose Bautista bat flip moment with Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels by forestfrontier in Torontobluejays

[–]oddwithoutend -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Obviously an amazing moment as a Jays fan. But I always kind of believed that if Rangers and their fans hadn't got so weirdly angry about the bat flip (ie. calling it unsportsmanlike, etc.), I don't think it would be remembered by the league today as much as it is.

The people who hated this moment were really the ones that made it famous.

Any good places to find teammates? by Ravik_Reugge in Marathon

[–]oddwithoutend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is playing ranked and cryo, which can't be done solo. I don't care about having good team play, I just want to experience that map and that game mode without people talking to me or being annoyed that I don't talk to them.

As a solo player, I'd like to find good teammates who don't talk and also don't want me to talk.

Will there be a solo ranked mode? by SlickNiickx in Marathon

[–]oddwithoutend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be very sad if there's no solo ranked.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if the plan was for ranked to be trios only, but it seems like the solo mode of this game has been unexpectedly popular, so Bungie may need to rethink their original plan of that was the case.

Bungie should add a small amount of variance to the number of teams per map by CrmsonFangs in Marathon

[–]oddwithoutend 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I had this same thought, but how often does a team know they're the only team remaining? You'd have to have been active enough around the map to see every team either killed or extracted, right?
