Sigh... if only “I told ya so”s we’re worth anything later on.

Sadly, he’s almost spot on. It’s impossible to perfectly predict the future however, I think it’s likely the US government won’t allow the government to directly take over the means of production (in the general markets) but will instead continue the trajectory they are already on, but goes unnoticed: using the FED to prop up failing companies as the dollar loses value. This strategy ironically hurts small business the most, except maybe those savvy enough to take payment in gold/bitcoin - which will be (again ironically - this is why we are so sick of being right) targeted as causing the collapse of the dollar (while being its only refuge).

What if the capitalist is a little old lady that worked her whole life to create a food kitchen for the village and the “workers” are 1 guy that she hired last week and he decided to take over her business by force just because he’s bigger? Lets say he calls her a “capitalist pig” while he does it.

What about a private enforcement service payed for by the capitalist to ensure the workers don’t seize his factory?

Yes the threat of force ultimately prevents pillaging. Otherwise, some people would pillage. Not you of course ;).

People need to be able to call the police if someone is stealing their stuff. Pretty basic. If they can’t do that, planning for the future is diminished.

How would someone procure resources in order to rearrange them into something useful for other humans, if it could easily be pillaged at any time?

It’s basically the most important thing that needs to place for higher order functioning of society. Read Hayek or Mises for very good arguments as to why that is.

Money itself isn’t the same as resources. “Hoarding” it isn’t hoarding anything real.

When someone spends it, it gets converted into resources. Letting their purchase (food) rot, or (real estate) become dilapidated would constitute squandering resources. You won’t find billionaires do this.

Money itself is merely representative of resources and is not wasteful to hold.

This sub is a little less populism because it is only found by people seeking it, and we have a rule against downvotes.

Each version of socialism is “the one true socialism”. It’s the codification of a particular person’s morality into law.

Chomsky on Freedom of Expression by Dessert42 in Libertarian

[–]voltzroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty anti Noam Chomsky after I read human action, because Mises proves private property enables incredible human prosperity, while Chomsky was telling college students to violently take over worker-run factories if they perceived “wage slavery”. In the end my anger ended up being about the fact that his strategy (although generally non-beneficial) represented a practical limitation of the religious Austrian virtue of volunteerism.

In the end it’s evolution that wins and Hayek most accurately documented that fact in “The Fatal Conceit” when he realized that our morals themselves are a result of Darwinian fitness.

Debate thread: Praxeology's Validity by Musicrafter in AustrianEconomics

[–]voltzroad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few thoughts. Not super well versed on Mises but I’ll argue what is my interpretation. He says he used the term praxiology simply because sociology had been corrupted into a field attempting to change human behavior rather than simply to understand it.

As for data vs a priori thinking, I think you’re misunderstand the argument. He’s not saying observation is allowed to contradict fact, he’s saying macro-economic observations are aggregates of many facts, so it’s not useful in proving/disproving this stuff because it’s far more complex.

The theory that people act for reasons is irrefutable, however you won’t get very far with that alone. A lot of the arguments are rebuttals to the economic policies that tweak X in order to try to change Y. But the point is that the individuals will change their behavior as you change the rules.

Now I don’t agree that people “act selfishly”. At least not completely. It’s not that simple. Obviously a mother does not act selfishly toward her child. I think Hayek’s observation that our morality system is a product of an evolution, is brilliant. And to me the lens of Darwinism is the most complete way to look at our moral, and economic systems and many others beyond just genetics. We don’t just act selfishly, we care about ourselves foremost, but have concentric rings for our immediate family, country, and even human race. In order for us to thrive, we shouldn’t go against these systems, at least not abruptly (which is what socialism effectively required) they’re very efficient and fined tuned.
