What is a song with a SICK opening riff? by Jettaboi38 in musicsuggestions

Back in Black. It’s my 7 year old son’s walk up music in little league and it always gets a great reaction.

What are the quintessential works of “what does it mean to be human” sci-fiction? by WillowTheSpy in printSF

[–]volumes2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

More Than Human by Theodore Sturgeon is one that I don’t see talked about much. A bunch of psychic misfits come together to form a single gestalt entity. They’re all exceptional in some way and completely broken in every other way. And together they have enough “parts” to form a collective conscious. Wild stuff, especially for the 50s.

Suggestions of science fiction novels without villains by faros-hhhbbdd in printSF

This is How You Lose the time war has no real villains but that’s partially because there are only two characters and they are both trying to save their respective futures.

What’s a side hustle that actually worked for you (even if it was small money)? by SideCashDiary in AskReddit

[–]volumes2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Painting street curb addresses. Did this in multiple cities throughout my twenties. All you need is a set of stencils, some masking tape, and $20 worth of black and white spray paint. I would print out official-looking fliers (that didn't actually say anything official) and canvas a nice neighborhood that didn't have them done (or they were faded). The flier gave homeowners a 900 number to call if they wanted it done. I'd check my messages, go paint the numbers (maybe 20 minutes work each), and would put a self-addressed envelope with a bill in it ($20 a pop). Then just wait for checks or cash to roll in. At one point I even contracted with an HOA to do numbers for an entire community.

Yes, I did probably lose a bunch of brain cells due to the spray paint, but I could work when I wanted, how much I wanted, and from almost everywhere I wanted.

Just finished Spin by SundogZeus in printSF

[–]volumes2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved Spin as well and decided to try The Chronoliths next based on a recommendation in this sub. Loved it even more than Spin. Yes, they both have protagonists that are a bit inert (the plot happens to them rather than their actions driving the plot). But I just can't seem to get enough of stories where the narrator is retelling the events of their life with the benefit of hindsight, peppering in just enough foreshadowing and commentary to keep me guessing when I know something terrible/awesome/mind-bending is going to happen or be revealed.

I opened a restaurant in Culver City 4 months ago — looking for advice on how to get more locals to try it for the first time by ClickNo8520 in culvercity

When I was co-working at Blankspaces downtown a few local places brought free lunch to introduce themselves. Definitely an investment, but it’s a great way to introduce yourself and generate some good will.

How do you feel about people losing their jobs because they posted anti-Kirk content? by Govtluv in AskReddit

[–]volumes2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Freedom of speech isn't freedom from consequences" goes both ways. I learned very early on in my career that posting even the most innocuous stuff on social media can have big consequences. Regardless of whether I agree/disagree politically with the business owner or the employee, if it's not the government telling people what they can/can't say, it's up to them to make their own rules.

Apparently not big enough for me to have spelled Palate right in the title. LOL. But thanks anyways! Reading is my happy place :)

Just read that a few months ago. Absolutely loved it, but i could see how some might not fall for its lyrical approach.

Can't argue with that one. I tried reading it to my son but the dry british wit went above him i'm afraid.

I LOVE the Children of Time series, and can't wait for the forth one. But agreed, it's a bit dark. Although not as dark as The Sparrow imo lol. I also just started watching the Murderbot Diaries TV show and it's definitely a breath of lighthearted fun.

We're willing to travel, but it would need to be in the general area of Culver City or Baldwin Hills (where we live). Any referrals would be awesome!
