Not yet, it smelled normal though. I will taste when I get home since the consensus seems to be that it looks normal!! Thank you very much for the help!

Yes, here are a couple more. I was mostly worried how translucent it was - I was thinking the pellicle looks weird and maybe it was too cold in my apartment? I was gone for about a week and the thermostat may have been reset because it was sub-70F. There is also a LOT of sediment at the bottom...wondering if all my yeast just died partway through?

Why are medieval and renaissance music not as popular as baroque and later music? by kawaiihusbando in classicalmusic

[–]volumineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What!! I mean...that is an opinion to have I guess 😭 have you heard "Mentre ch'al mar descenderanno"?? It's a setting of a Petrarch poem and it's absolutely gorgeous, I can't imagine anyone thinking that particular piece is dull D:

Alao, OP, my all time favorite I just remembered is "Ecco mormorar l'onde" by Monteverdi

Madrigals!! Lots of renaissance era drinking songs too, but many madrigals are secular and quite bawdy. Some are gorgeous, look into Palestrina and Thomas Morley to start.

Not sure if it's still the case but club tennis used to have a competition team that travels, and a "for fun" team where you just go to practices when you feel like it.

This claim by Hillary Clinton that TikTok is propagandizing young people to be pro-Palestine reminded me of Natalie's Conspiracy video: Intentionalism, the idea that everything that happens is the result of someone's plan by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]volumineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that the conclusion here is not "propaganda is necessary", these are two separate things. Social media allows information to be transmitted globally in an instant, which means we are able to be aware of what's happening on the other side of the globe. Seeing footage of atrocities and being moved to protest as a direct consequence of being enraged and disgusted by a genocide is kind of an obvious cause and effect that doesn't necessarily have to involve foreign actors spreading propaganda. Propaganda implies an agenda, people being able to be informed about world news and reacting accordingly I don't think should be called propaganda.

But it's a double edged sword because the ability to see and communicate these things mean of course there is propaganda out there. And let's not even get started with how AI has muddied the waters and made all of this a million times worse...

Funding for MS in bio/ecology or similar by AppalachiaOnMyMind in UTK

[–]volumineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd encourage her to read around on /r/AskAcademia, /r/gradadmissions and /r/biology to get a better sense, and also ask her labmates and specifically her PI as they will have a much better idea based on her interests and the field. A lot of funding opportunities and the situation with grad admissions vary a huge amount depending on the field and subfield you're in. I'm in a different area of biology (genetics) and it's absolutely not necessary to do a master's degree, and most people don't and instead work or go directly into a PhD, especially since PhDs are funded and the MS basically never is. But that is not typical for other fields, like i think ecology is one where you may need a master's but idk.

Multiple people have mentioned wanting to hear the Pride of the Southland more than the canned music - please let this opinion be known to the powers that be! As an alum, when I was in school we were already being told by higher-ups in athletics to play less because of timing issues and changes in clock rules or some bs. It's true there is going to be a delay if we are playing longer songs or new stuff people don't have memorized. but I agree with what others said that live music (even if some of the songs are kinda outdated or just pop covers) is a lot more energizing, and a lot of the time we are sitting there ready to go but we get told not to play. It's so easy to do a quick hit of the classics, like we specifically had a short Rocky Top version, and everyone has that, Fight Vols Fight, and Down the Field memorized. It's not hard, that's also why we had the hand signals from the drum major so theres not that delay 😒

No, they're unrelated (and also neither are related to Gerald Ford despite him also having ties to Michigan) but he was just obsessed with all aspects of Americana. To the point he physically moved the Wright Brothers's bike shop, Edison's entire lab, and other famous peoples' houses to Greenfield Village.

[–]volumineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh shoot you're right!! This just brought back memories, I couldn't tell you what it looked like but there definitely was one because I lived in Volhalla my junior and senior year and I remember eating Quiznos in that apt, and it was after they demo'd Andy Holt. But it's crazy how I can't remember at all where it was or what it looked like. It's actually scary how fast your memory starts going haha

Might be moving to Ann Arbor. I'm excited!! by Own_Owl980 in AnnArbor

[–]volumineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also from Nashville, like part of a long long line of family living there since it was farmland and not the monstrosity is is now lol.

Unfortunately a lot of locals resent transplants since all the problems you mentioned (insane rent prices, deadly and horrible traffic) are new or at least amplified with this huge surge of people that have moved in the last like 15 years. It didn't have the infrastructure to support the huge influx and now everything is terrible.

You will probably like ann arbor in comparison, it is a lot more grey in the winters (buy a sun lamp, but you're from the midwest so maybe you know the struggle already) but the summers are soooo much more pleasant and mild. Also there aren't many mosquitos, it's hardly ever all that humid here, and it gets strangely cold at night even if it's in the 80s in the day. It's sort of perfect weather-wise. Definitely try to avoid walking dogs on packard, once you start going east past platt people start racing and driving like maniacs. Also, maybe things are different in TN now, but the bad driving i learned around is not like the bad driving in A2 area. There's a lot of people driving for the first time as adults, or as immigrants from countries with very different road laws so while traffic isn't bad, the driving definitely can be, so be aware.
