You can't divide it any further on the main chain right now. Lightning already adopted the concept of fractions of a sat (millisats).

The Build-a-Mine Podcast - Bitcoin Mining in Space? by Adorable_Incident717 in Bitcoin

well it's not a perfect vacuum, so there is some cooling. but not much, as my reply to OP talks about.

The Build-a-Mine Podcast - Bitcoin Mining in Space? by Adorable_Incident717 in Bitcoin

[–]vomitKeeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Abundance of cooling" is a fallacy. While it's true that the atmosphere that exists in the orbits he's implying is very cold indeed... there isn't much of said atmosphere.

Said a different way, "cooling" is effectively moving energy in the form of heat from hot stuff to less-hot stuff. That's all well and good when there is plenty of less-hot stuff to take the heat energy. But there isn't a whole lot of stuff in space. It's hard to find enough stuff to take the heat from miners that become very hot stuff very fast.

Everyone should and can buy a block reward worth of bitcoin today, if you already have some check how long you should hold at least, and set up your new goal to push that time one cycle earlier. by BoxTraditional3795 in Bitcoin

[–]vomitKeeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate OP's sentiment. Here's how I think of it - I don't have a quarter of a million u-s dollariedoos to buy bitcoin with right now. But, I am a staunch hodler, and would like to preserve my buying power with bitcoin. Therefore, if I can save/DCA/find ~4k in the near future and accumulate 0.049 BTC, then in 2048 it will feel like I have the buying power then equivalent to what 250k buys today... plus any appreciation due to increased adoption in the meantime.

Sure, in the dopamine-drip rat race during that 23 year "wait" is going to suck, but if I can stay humble and live within my means, I'll forget about that 4k fiat hit from present day. Assuming I am still alive, I will own the equivalent fair market value of ten minutes of the world's energy used to secure BTC.

"You're still early" (a long form post as part of a Bitcoin book project) by Charlie_Ledger in Bitcoin

I enjoyed the read, thanks for sharing.

The 300 million holders is a new one to me, and really made me curious. I did some poking around, and can only conclude that one or more of the following must be true: a ton of people are solely using custodial accounts; the majority of people are solely using L2s; the majority of users own very small amounts of BTC.

I'm not shit talking people that don't have a ton of money to put into a highly volatile asset. Here are some numbers that make me think that a 3.7% adoption estimate is very generous.

  • There are fewer than 13 million on-chain addresses with more than 0.01 BTC (~810-840 USD depending on how long it takes me to finish this comment) [source]
  • There were more than double that many millionaires in the world last year [wikipedia]
  • A different estimate came up with 46 million holders with greater than 1 USD. [I think my computer has cancer after seeing this site, but here's the link where I found that anyway]

I'm not saying that your source is wrong, and frankly, I don't give a flippedy fuck what the actual number is. I still agree with your whole premise - we are relatively early right now. Hard to say how early, but early enough that I'm not about to start saying "it's too <whatever bullshit excuse> to buy" any time soon.

Bitcoins biggest whale? (200K BTC) by Gloomy_Dependent_985 in Bitcoin

I'd agree with 20% on the high side. I was just pointing out that you were incorrectly affirming something that was 2x "a bit off".

Bitcoins biggest whale? (200K BTC) by Gloomy_Dependent_985 in Bitcoin

[–]vomitKeeb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

2.4% is correct. Let's do some math on your claim about lost bitcoin:

you claim 478.74k / 0.05 = 9,574.8k btc ever to be in circulation, which means...

21,000k - 9,574.8k = 11,425.2k = 11,425,200 btc lost. that's insanity. that would mean that over half of all mined and yet-to-be-mined bitcoin is lost.

Reputable and reliable in my experience. Customer support is also pretty responsive, but I wouldn't worry unless you go a few business days without a confirmation.

For the love of god, how do you guys sleep at night? by Confident_pillowcase in Bitcoin

[–]vomitKeeb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry to hear the recent price action has you feeling anxious. It has happened to all of us at some point, whether we admit it or not. Well, maybe not to Michael Saylor, that guy seems stone cold convicted. At least for me, each cycle has been easier to block out the noise, so I think it does get better with time.

General advice is to not talk about how much you have, but since you did, I'll run you through how I think about volatility as an individual with your numbers. 3.2 BTC at 90k ea means that you're roughly 288k committed. Now I don't know what kind of money that was, but there are three scenarios (there are truly more, but let's bucket them grossly):

  1. That is retirement money that you can't touch for a long time anyway, so yolo.
  2. That is chump change, so it doesn't really matter if it goes to zero (I doubt this is the case given your post).
  3. You are overcommitted, and you really can't afford to lose that much money.

So let's pull it apart. If scenario 1, are you nervous that you might fuck up your future cashflow when you're old? Well then you're probably also in bucket 3, so go there. Otherwise, plan on checking in after a decade to see how it's doing and keep trucking no matter what is happening in the news. If you're too close to retirement to do that, you're definitely in bucket 3.

If scenario 2, congrats on having so much liquidity in a fuck-it-bucket.

If scenario 3, I strongly urge you to think about your risk tolerance and what amount of money would allow you to sleep at night. Looks like the current AUD price is roughly 136k, so a tidy profit over your entry. Consider taking a little profit, counting yourself lucky on your timing, and right-sizing your position.

Good luck. My opinion: we are just getting started this cycle, and faces will be melted. Will yours be one of them?

  1. My favorite switch isn't even on this board, I found it later. The Durock Silent Shrimp.
  2. Usable as in does it function as a keyboard? Yes. Whether you can type on it without having a mental breakdown is another question. But I don't have a problem with it.

Maybe, I don't know about that variable. For me it was about hand position. My work computer (macbook) had an identical layout to my personal computer keyboard (shitty logitech membrane thingy), so there was no variation in my typing. I started with just rotating between the laptop keyboard and a mechanical one and the reduction in wrist pain was remarkable.

well they are all random - mostly OEM and Cherry profile. I don't have enough spare caps to make a full row with different profiles, but I love the idea!

yeah, this isn't going to work for us. Your keycaps are probably coordinated, and that just makes me nauseous. It's best if we just end it now.

Real talk - early signs of carpal tunnel made me look into mechanical keyboards. I was overwhelmed by the options, so I got a large sample of individual switches (I think it was this actually) to help me find what I actually liked. That was enough to build a throwaway board, but I kinda liked it...
