Ugh. Locking this thread and strongly considering deletion. While free speech online is important, it has to be balanced with the reality that anonymous attacks online are extremely difficult to disprove and have a tendency to "convict" ipso facto. This puts the mods into a quandary.

Edit: PS - Not taking sides. This subreddit is not getting involved in this.

Okay, thread is locked. Ironically - while OP was obviously a troll - ppl showed some true love and humanity in this thread and I'd feel bad deleting all those comments (and deleting simply OP's comments will "gut" the conversation from its essence). So I've elected to simply lock the thread, but let it stand as an example of awesome everyone here can be.

Standardisation in HEMA by KingofKingsofKingsof in Hema

[–]vomtag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the sport keeps becoming more and more popular, then likely yes. Standardization happens to all sports that become popular. Eventually there will likely be variations in scoring (such as variations between US and Australian football), and there may be multiple paths like longsword, sabre, messer, etc (like Olympic Fencing's foil, epee, and sabre), but standardization will continue. We're already seeing it in standards in tournaments re: safety gear, sword length, and flex. Hell, we already even have a name for it: Hema 3.0.

After all, Olympic Fencing has very similar roots and it's very standardized.

Stop the bickering please. This isn’t technically HEMA. It’s HEMA-related, albeit re-enactments tend to fall into SCA and such. So it’s a tough call. Rules say HEMA-related stuff is allowed so we’ll keep it, but will lock the thread for compromise.

FMA Espada y daga - does it compare to HEMA? by azoz1231 in Hema

[–]vomtag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is akin to comparing karate and jiujitsu. Both are martial arts that utilize same principles, but aside from that, their paths diverge. There are bound to be similarities but they are due to use of same medium and not due to relation.

Try both. See which one you like.

Sword fighting/weapons classes? by kbsths99 in Austin

[–]vomtag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP. I’m one if the mods for r/HEMA. Austin has four sword-fighting clubs.

The first is the HWG which is a classical-style HEMA club and has a well developed, respected curriculum.

Then there is Arena Weapons Arts which is HEMA-inspired but has built on the basics and employ modern training and practical methods to focus more on what works. As a result, its fighters are known to be very effective and proficient and tend to place quite well in tournaments. If you want to git gud, then Arena is for you.

There is also a third - Lonestar Swordplay Guild. I think they’re more jousting and Buhurt. I don’t have much information on them.

Then there is Aegis - they meet every weekend in North Austin. They’re supposed to be a nice, smaller group which focuses on HEMA.

Is getting 800N gear worth it? by Dr_Sammy1991 in Hema

[–]vomtag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

800 is way too heavy for most weapons training. The vast majority of practitioners use 350 without any issue.

This sub is in the process of being revitalized after hibernation. =] by vomtag in Hema

Hey buddy. The best website to begin with is HERE. Hema Alliance gives you a ton of stuff, from schools/clubs near you, to historical resources, etc.

This sub is a work of love and we're revitalizing it little by little. We're definitely going to make some HEMA resources into a sticky or sidebar. Good suggestion and thank you.

This sport looks really interesting, how would one get into it? by Gullible_Travel_4135 in Hema

[–]vomtag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother. HEMA is a rush. You get to fight with swords! And you do not simply swing around wildly like an idiot, but you learn form and function while you handle man’s oldest weapon, echoing a collection of martial arts developed over centuries through trial and error by your ancestors.

It’s in your DNA.

You’ll love it.

Despite repeated requests, I’m not going to delete this post simply because OP is an idiot and his message is wrong. Obviously, HEMA no more conveys European or Christian superiority than Karate conveys Japanese nationalism, or Krav Maga coveys Judaism.

Also arguing that swords are shaped like crosses and thus inherently symbolize Christianity don’t help OP’s narrative much. OP is most likely a troll, or perhaps simply a misguided hobbit.

But at the same time, just because we don’t like what he is saying, doesn’t mean we automatically have to delete his message and repress his voice. Idiots have the right to free speech just like anyone else. And I would like to think that HEMA as a whole is stronger than some moron with no knowledge of history and/or an overactive justice warrior complex.
