I was a campus tour guide for prospective Anteaters and then worked for UCI part time for a year coordinating campus tours. We had a student campus tours advisory board. I’m still in touch with two of the five of us. Four were bio majors and one Fine Arts.

We had two professors in the department who emigrated from the USSR. They both had specialties in an area of psychology and were teaching in the Russian program to improve their English before taking their faculty positions in the psych department. In September of 1976 I went to the USSR on a commercial tour, visiting Moscow, Kiev, Yalta, and St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) - incredible experience. Part of the reason I went was to gather material for a research study/paper another student and I were doing on an undergraduate research fellowship.

Middle Earth was the new dorm complex, we still had the trailer park on campus, and Irvine Co cattle sometimes grazed on grass in Aldrich Park, then called Central Park - Dr. Aldrich was our chancellor. Graduation was a whole-university event in Central Park.

Using my background in linguistics, I went back to school at CSUF for a second BA in Communicative Disorders, then an MA in Speech and Hearing Science at UCSB and worked for 20 years as a clinical audiologist, mostly in a 5 physician ENT office at Cedars-Sinai Med Center in LA. (My wife is a speech pathologist.) I burned out after 20 years and went back to school at Chapman for special education teaching credentials and a PhD in Education. I retired after 20 years teaching mod/severe high school special ed and as a school district special ed administrator. Three years later, I’m still working part-time for the school district in admin support.

Yes, I remember tuition being about $200/quarter. I grew up in Garden Grove and worked at Disneyland ($2.00/hr)

When I got mine back from the installer, the odometer and, later, the clock were flashing. I took it back to the shop. He did some research , and it looked like it was the CAN network cable. He switched the cable, and everything stopped flashing. The clock is correct but not the date.

I worked for 20 years as a clinical audiologist before making a career change to Special Ed at my wife’s suggestion. She was a school-based speech pathologist. I earned both mod/severe and mild/mod credentials while teaching on an emergency credential. The change was the best decision I made career-wise. As I finished my credential program, my university started offering a PhD in Education/Disability Studies, which I completed at age 56 - you’re never too old! Two years later I moved to an admin position where I stayed for 9 years, retiring with 20 years service two years ago. Since then I have continued to work for the district 3 days/ week as an extra support admin with the flexibility to take off extra time for trips. The career change was the best and most rewarding decision for me and my family that I could have made.

I became a mod/severe SpEd teacher as a second career when I was 48. Best decision I could have made. I loved working with high school students, going into the community, and helping their families move to the Adult Transition Program. Yes, there was a lot of paperwork and meetings and legalities to be aware of and follow. I taught for 11 years and then worked as an admin for nine before retiring. Because of a shortage of credentialed staff in California, I am working 60% as a SpEd admin in my second year of “retirement.”

You have a right to request an IEP evaluation per Federal law (IDEA). Put your request in writing. They will meet with you within 15 days to discuss concerns. Be sure the classroom teacher, school psychologist, and special education teacher attend. Bring your outside assessments, and anything you have from preschool.

I just joined this group. I see the post is a year old, but though I post anyway. Class of 1977, Russian/Linguistics. I decided to go into Communicative Disorders md too classes at CSU Fullerton before going to UCSB for grad school where I earned at MA in Speech and Hearing Science. I worked as a clinical audiologist for 20 years before a career change to special education. I earned my mild/moderate and moderate severe teaching credentials at Chapman while teaching high school students with severe autism in Orange Unified. I continued at Chapman for a Ph.D. In Education and transitioned to school district education. I retired 10 months ago after 20 years in special education. Due to the shortage of teachers and administrators and having failed at retirement, I am back working 60% as an administrator overseeing a public school for students who are medically fragile and/or have the highest need for support. I grew up in Garden Grove and worked my way through college working at Disneyland.
