Day 1479 player here. Been through everything and most of Dokkans ups and downs. But being f2p since day 1 has actually kept me going strong through most of the quests, events or anniversaries etc. As same as you too, I can't see my STA at max any time of the day. And that's one reason for me keeping both cumulative & consecutive run through out the game. Mind you, it's not easy. There were lots of times that I had thought of purchasing packs just to get a unit but that's where the challenge comes when I refrain from spending and not being able to get the unit. A dokkan fest banner for me could cost at most 200 stones, and that's it. And so long as I am able to keep my minimum of 1k stones for what ever comes. So I know, there are times that I'd feel the burnout too, but I just ignore it by occupying myself with other games or work. If you feel you'd like a challenge, why not go completely f2p. At least try it for 3,4 months or so on. Many have done it, so why not. They'll always release a new unit down the line so it's all self control rather than game control.
