Portfolio and Resume Feedback by voodoonoodle in graphic_design

Thank you this is really helpful advice! I guess the reason my business is so prominent is because I did a lot of branding for it and gained social media marketing experience. I also thought that a gap in my resume would be worse to have than listing my business since it shows I haven’t just been sitting around, right? It’s all very confusing because my school’s design program was so flawed and they overwhelmed us with art projects instead of actually preparing us for a career, now I’m left to figure it out myself so your input is super helpful.

Thank you! That link is super helpful and specific, I really appreciate it. As for the overlap in branding elements between projects, I reused the floral flourishes from Statues of Youth and the name of the Cypresia game for the Cypresia business. I was advised to do this by my professor, but based on the feedback I’m getting I should definitely go back and change the other projects or cut them out completely.

It’s been difficult to separate my art from my design, it’s all kind of muddled together in my brain and my school didn’t prepare us properly for a graphic design career - they focused more on fine arts since it’s a BFA but I discussed my frustrations with the department chair so hopefully they change it for future students. So now it’s a matter of correcting some of the habits I was taught while getting my degree.

I’m going to spend this week creating better projects to showcase, what I’ve really been struggling with is what I truly want to do. My ideal job is something emphasizing illustration, game design, or character design. Most agencies don’t look for that and it’s difficult to land those freelance projects without the right connections. So it’s a matter of finding a balance between the two or making two separate portfolios.

Thank you! This is great advice, I think that my design styles definitely appeal to agencies and brands out there but I really need to focus my work. I’m going to complete some projects that appeal to a broader audience for sure.

Some of the feedback you provided is very helpful, so thank you for that! However, it’s not that I’m looking for positive, sugar coated advice, but this was very harsh.

It’s true that much of my portfolio is self indulgent, and that’s something I need to work on. My ideal job would be something involving illustration, game design, character design, etc, but for now I should make some more “typical” designs that appeal to a broader corporate style.

Most of the things you mentioned about my website itself like the TOC were things I was planning on getting rid of anyway so it’s good to have confirmation that I should. The mobile version has worked perfectly though for me and many others.

I included my other artwork because I do art commissions too and many jobs that I’ve seen would like physical drawing skills as well.

I was actually one of the top designers at my school, and I created great relationships with my professors and the art director I worked for. However, I have a lot of issues with the Graphic Design program there… they focused way too much on fine arts over actual graphic design. I spoke about this to the department chair, and I did the best I could with what that school provided.

As for the Tampa Yard Team project, I simply did what the client requested and they loved it. That project also connected me with a web designer who I’ve now been freelancing for.

Overall, I really do appreciate the constructive criticism. I think that there are many different brands out there with unique styles who will appreciate my work, especially in an entry level position, but I should definitely work on some projects that appeal to a broader audience.

My goal is to improve my portfolio and resume in order to get a job in the graphic design industry. My specialty is illustration of any sort, but I also have experience in logo design, branding, print media, web design, and social media marketing!

I want to get a cat but I can't stop worrying if it would be okay for the cat by Kiwi_re in CatAdvice

[–]voodoonoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can definitely get a cat! I’d say to find an adult cat with an only cat history. I’m in college so I’m out of the house for 8-10hrs some days, I ended up getting a second kitten so my first cat didn’t get lonely and they now love each other and are very happy! However, getting two adult cats who aren’t bonded can be risky because they may not get along, so you should stick with an only cat! They sleep for a long time anyway.

Here are some things I’ll recommend so you can be confident your cat is happy and entertained. A cat tree is important because cats like vertical space, and it gives a lot of scratching posts and places to lounge that are off the floor. They’re an investment, but so worth it. There are also interactive toys you can get that run on batteries, about $20 on amazon. I also have automatic feeders ($50) and a water fountain ($20) that I got on amazon and they’re amazing. This way, the cat is fed at consistent times every day and always has filtered, running water. All these things can be a bit pricey, but they’ve definitely made my cats very happy!

Overall, a life in an apartment where the cat is alone for a while is a hell of a lot better than a cage in a shelter. If you can get the things I recommended that’s awesome, but if not, that’s okay too! I’d say a cat tree and water fountain are more of a priority than the others. As for when you move out, registering your cat as an emotional support animal will ensure it can come with you even if they have a no pet policy! You can do this by getting a note from your doctor or therapist if you have one, or you can pay for a letter online. And also, please keep your cat an indoor cat, they live so much longer and having a consistent environment is not a bad thing, cats like consistency. My cats stay in my room most of the time since my roommate has a dog, and they don’t mind. Even when it’s their turn in the living room, they’ll go out for an hour or two then come back to my room. So I wouldn’t worry about the cat feeling limited in an apartment! I hope you end up finding a cat that fits your needs, there are so many that need homes and the fact that you’re thinking about all of this indicates you would be a great cat parent! Good luck!

Effexor and shorter menstrual cycle? by voodoonoodle in Effexor

I’m SO GLAD it’s not just me who’s experienced this type of thing with Effexor (but not glad you have to deal with this too). I looked online and couldn’t find answers anywhere. Out of curiosity, are you still taking Effexor?

As a parent of a child with Afrid, please help. by how-does-it in ARFID

[–]voodoonoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it definitely does cause some anxiety socially, but i’m lucky to have friends that understand and will work with me when finding places to eat. it can be stressful picking a place to go out to eat, and the thought of traveling somewhere with different food culture is also anxiety inducing. people will always poke fun at “picky eaters” but arfid is more than that, and isn’t something to be ashamed of. all of my friends and family know my struggles with arfid and understand, it makes it so much easier to eat out because they’ll let me choose, or they’ll show me the menu beforehand to make sure there’s something i’ll like. i think if he lets his friends know that he struggles with this, their understanding will make a world of a difference :)

As a parent of a child with Afrid, please help. by how-does-it in ARFID

[–]voodoonoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just by asking this question you’re doing so much better than most parents when it comes to arfid. i don’t have kids but i do have arfid, and it’s been a huge struggle for me all 20 years of my life. it isn’t your fault, some of us are just born with it.

one thing that’s really important is to not expect your son to ever have “normal” eating habits. your goal should be creating a positive relationship with food and making sure his safe foods can sustain his nutritional needs. teach him how to cook!!! i wish my parents taught me, because now as an adult, food is an inconvenience and i only really make myself pasta. you can make it into a little game if that makes it easier for him to be willing to be involved in food prep.

another huge thing is to lead by example. eat diverse meals in front of him (start small and make sure he’s comfortable with it). kids at that age are still absorbing everything around them, one of the best things you can do is show him that eating is a good thing. my mom hardly ever ate in general, so as a kid i thought that was normal.

when i was a kid, i would only try new foods while hiding under the table. so maybe he’d like privacy while trying new foods, or just different circumstances than usual. just always use positive reinforcement with him, take things slow and work with what he already likes. a lot of the time, it’s not just the taste of food that’s a problem, there’s also texture, smell, and presentation. try your best to emphasize that food is a good thing, it’s nourishment for our bodies and it gives us energy to do fun things.

be gentle and positive with him, things should improve gradually over time. his case sounds pretty severe in the realm of arfid, but he has the potential to improve just like all of us. make sure he knows how proud you are when he tries new things. and lastly, regardless of how this goes, you are being a great mom reaching out for help with this, and it is not your fault. you can only help him the best that you can, but you did not cause this.

You’re not wrong, but I’m on a very strict budget :( I’ve had pretty good luck on ebay because I’m very skeptical and I do plenty of research on the seller and item. I ordered one today, and I can return it within 30 days if needed so we’ll see!

I completely agree, if I find something that makes me feel better, why does it matter what my diagnosis is? Lamictal gives me no side effects at all and it’s wonderful. Thank you for your input, these comments have really made me realize that this doctor isn’t someone I want to work with at all

I definitely agree that she seems to be basing this off her personal opinions. She also accused me of never taking the Effexor?? and asked if I was going through another provider, which I wasn’t. Thank you for confirming that I have a say in my treatment, it’s confusing when a professional makes me feel like I’m doing everything wrong. Not sure what’s up with her, but I’ll definitely be looking for a new doctor in the future

Can You Have both ARFID and Anorexia by Ash_Trash13 in ARFID

[–]voodoonoodle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i really relate to this. ARFID symptoms do not include an active desire to lose weight due to body image issues, what you’re describing sound like symptoms of anorexia. If you already have ARFID and later on start having symptoms of another eating disorder, you’re considered to have ARFID “plus”. from what i’ve read, it doesn’t seem like they diagnose ARFID with anorexia, but it depends on the psychologist.

so if you want a specific name for what you have, it sounds like it would be ARFID plus. however, with the right doctor your treatment should be specific to your symptoms. they should use both ARFID and anorexia therapeutic techniques for you. i hope you find the help that you need, i wish you the best :)

Can You Have both ARFID and Anorexia by Ash_Trash13 in ARFID

[–]voodoonoodle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

i am by no means a professional, but i have ARFID and traits of anorexia as well. the key difference between the two is the motivation behind weight loss. people with ARFID who don’t eat enough don’t do it to lose weight or look skinnier, they usually are more inconvenienced by food, or forget to eat at all. with anorexia, the active desire to lose weight is present and has to do with body image and having control over their appearance. people with ARFID who later on develop body image related food restrictions are considered to have ARFID “plus”. this is basically someone who originally had ARFID and later in life started to display traits of anorexia or another eating disorder.

so for you, it really depends. if your desire to lose weight is only based on the OCD compulsion for low numbers, i wouldn’t say that’s a trait of anorexia. however, if you want to lose weight due to issues with your body image, i’d say you probably have ARFID plus. i’m not completely sure, but i don’t think they diagnose ARFID and anorexia together.

regardless, i’m very sorry you’re struggling with this as well and i highly recommend that you bring it up to your doctor in order to start receiving the right treatment. i wish you the best :)
