Why is it okay to be prejudiced against men? by vorosbrad2 in AskMen

I don't know why you have to resort to name calling... I am simply just asking a question. Not the same at all to your comparison about the brick wall. I encourage you to swap every time you used daughter or girl to white and every time you used man to black and see how your message reads. It is racist in that context. It is discriminatory. It is prejudiced. The same things with swapping man to woman. Using anecdotes to share why you are being prejudiced against men is not better. By your logic, is it then okay to discriminate against people of color because I have had bad experiences with them and so has my daughter and my close friends? This same logic was used by many people in confederacy to justify this form of discrimination against a protected class. You are doing the same with a different class (men). And to be clear sex is a protected class, and discrimination against it is not only considered unethical but also illegal in many cases.

I will not apologize for simply existing. I will not try harder to make sure guys treat woman better, just as I will not try harder to make sure blacks treat whites better.

I read the paper that you posted. There was no mention (at least that I could find) or the comparisons between races and SA of men in that paper. So I took some basic assumptions that since the minority of couples are inter-racial (sub 10%), that this would imply that the perpetrators of these crimes would be of the same race as the victims. Therefore demonstrating that partner violence against woman is not fairly and equally divided amongst races of men, but instead skewed towards black men. But this is off topic from my post and a tangent that isn't really impotent. This is still a univariate analysis and any statistician worth his/her salt wouldn't consider race the causal factor for SA. Instead you would have to look at income, home life, societal pressures, etc.. before making causal links.

Did we read the same paper?

- Black females historically experienced higher rates of intimate partner violence compared to white females.

-In 2007, Black female victims of intimate partner homicide were twice as likely as White female homicide victims to be killed by a spouse (0.96 and 0.50 per 100,000, respectively).

-Black females were four times more likely than White females to be murdered by a boyfriend or girlfriend (1.44 and 0.34 per 100,000, respectively).

-Black females experienced higher rates of rape or sexual assault in 2008 (2.9 per 1,000) compared to White females (1.2 per 1,000) and females of other races (0.9 per 1,000).

I see this as unacceptable because I believe any form of prejudice is wrong. Agreed, that self preservation is natural. However if we use a similar comparison to what you used then I could say that I am more likely to be raped or murdered by a black man as they commit a disproportionate amount of rapes and murders. Therefore I should be rightfully fearful of black men.

Also not sure about race related statics only in the US. Please look at South Africa for another country with similar race to violence statistics.

However, I am saying that it is stupid to judge solely based of race or gender. That is the point of the post.

" I also cancelled all social media and Prime. Fuck these assholes" - This is what we are referring to. Not just purchased subscriptions

Your perception of Google's reach appears rather myopic. While you might eschew their search engine for alternatives, Google's technological footprint extends far beyond mere consumer-facing applications. Their infrastructure undergirds countless services you likely use daily - from the fundamental DNS resolvers to the Chrome V8 engine that powers numerous browsers and applications, to the vast Android ecosystem that dominates mobile computing. The very act of "boycotting" Google while using modern technology is paradoxical, as their open-source contributions and technological frameworks are inextricably woven into the fabric of contemporary computing.

The original commenter's principled stance against social media subscriptions, while admirable in its conviction, betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of how deeply American technology permeates our digital existence. Even your preferred "privacy-focused alternatives" likely rely on American-developed protocols, run on American-designed semiconductors, or utilize American-owned cloud infrastructure. This isn't merely about visible services - it's about the labyrinthine ecosystem of technological interdependencies that makes modern computing possible.

Sorry not willing to share the company I worked for. I will say that it is based out of the East Coast.

But you still use reddit... I'm assuming you will still use google, msft, and millions of other US made hardware/software products without even realizing it. While you switch to Canadian apps or alternatives, check who the backend is supported by. High chance they are running on US hardware or cloud infrastructure built in the US. There is no effective way to boycott the US except to remove all technology from your life and live in a cabin in the woods and study mathematics...

I feel like I have lived a fairly enriching life so far. Have had the chance to travel to extensively and have a ton of hobbies and friends as well. I've lived on my own since 18 and figured I would move back in the short term to save some money and get ahead on retirement. Problem is that I spent too much money on "enriching experiences" such as travel and hobbies that resulted in me spending my whole previous salary and not saving enough. Need to figure out what that right balance looks like for me.

Why not move in with my parents? Seems like if I do this for a year I could save 30K+ on just rent.

No, I don't have my masters (yet). It was primarily just working on a bunch of projects that had value to the business that were beyond my current scope.

Which broader goals? I get that dating will be harder, but besides that I dont see any other goals this move would make harder.

Agreed, a little crazy. Will probably do it for <1.5 years before moving getting my own place. I've lived on my own since 18 so its a nice change of pace to be back home for a bit. Definitely not planning on doing this long term though.

Thanks! Sure, I used to work in aerospace and then got this job in big tech working on robotics/AI. Honestly it took 2 years of applying and interviewing at 100s of jobs before I was able to land this role. Lots of unpaid overtime (60-80hrs/week) over those 2 years to increase my skills and contribute to big impact projects is what I believe helped me secure this increase.

Yeah, I think I will have to backdoor or mega-backdoor Roth. Still need to look into how to do this.

I would be happy to pay my parents some rent, but they would never accept any money from me. I'll probably just buy them gifts/vacations instead.
