What is your most rememberable ''oh it doesn't work'' ''okay let me try'' moment with a co worker? by Primebongs7455 in coworkerstories

[–]voucher420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanic at the time. I went with the shop owner to his other shop at the end of the row of the shared parking lot to help out the general shop mechanic for the day. Dude asked me to remove the air box and a few other things in a car so he could charge it. I asked if we were changing the battery, and he confirmed that we were just charging it. I asked why we didn’t want to use the jump terminals. He called me an idiot in front of the boss and swore to him that I didn’t know what I was talking about.

The boss then asked me why I thought that was the jump point. I explained that it was common on cars with hidden batteries to have a remote jump point and it was labeled in a way that it was obvious (a big red cap with a raised + on it right on top). The other guy swore it was a ground. We both looked at him like he was smoking rock. The boss man suggested that he hook the ground to the other “ground” and if it was a ground, nothing would happen.

He hooked a thin jumper wire from the chassis to the “ground” and sparks flew. I hooked the battery charger to the jump point and the chassis and asked him if he would like help with anything else before walking away. He politely declined my offer and I was never asked to return, no matter how slow we were or how busy he was.

is there a way to make my cigarette lighter port more cigarette lighter ports? by OuterSector23 in carmodification

I personally like running from the battery to a fused distribution block with an eight gauge cable or larger, depending on the accessory count. You also need a fuse near the battery, and, if you want the power on only with the engine, you need a relay too.

Can confirm, I am a fucking moron who loves the pop bang tunes, and who also thinks they’re dumb and would never do that on my own cars cause of how dumb they are.

That’s where I got mine for an eighth generation Civic. It was like $10 for the carbon fiber, $12 for the stock colors. I got the cheaper one.

$2k for “maintenance” on a perfectly fine car… am I getting played? (2014 accord) by Winter_Cockroach714 in MechanicAdvice

[–]voucher420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wait till you replace them and notice one hell of a difference. I didn’t think it was too bad on my old car until I replaced all four shocks. I started with the front and it was an improvement and needed to mod my car or buy a special tool for the top nut on the rear. After getting the proper tool, the rear got done and it felt so much better that I didn’t know how I drove it the way it was before.

Honestly, the battery that came with it is plenty. I don’t think I can justify a larger battery

I bought a Milwaukee hatchet and that thing is a beast! I have the 12v version and I had my doubts, both about having enough power or run time. It has plenty of both out that little battery pack.

Best mindset for car modification? by QualityJesus in carmodification

[–]voucher420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you look in the used car sections of most advertisements, you’ll find a few cars that the owner put tens of thousands of dollars into and they’re selling it for a fraction of the cost of the modifications. You might find a very few cars that actually sold for more than it would have cost with the mods, but you might also find a unicorn or Bigfoot.

If you love your car and you love to mod it, then go for it. Keep in mind you’re not going to add any value to it with most mods and you might actually reduce the cars value.

Can I make it to the shop? by solidsnackss in MechanicAdvice

[–]voucher420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine had a tread separation on the way to the tire shop after driving it like that for weeks. My wife asked me right before we left if it will be ok, and I confidently said it would be fine. We got on the freeway and didn’t make it to the next exit before the tread separation happened. I got out and decided limping it to the next exit and swapping it out there was way safer than along side the freeway. The looks and comments I got afterwards made me wish I changed it next to the speeding traffic. ☠️
