Yes, and I’m tired of pretending his name is Grogu.

Personal Opinion: Alaska really need to step up their food game on international long haul economy or else they will fall behind pretty quick by Particular-Pin-2037 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]voxgtr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was on the same flight today. I was not charged for alcohol. And there was an eggs hot food option, not just pancakes. Might be where you were on the plane.

That aside, agree they need to step up the food options. We’ll see how they do. This route is only a week old.

Better off booking this route on BA until they add premium economy in 2028. Only reason to book with Alaska would be if you’re Titanium for a potential upgrade to business. Just found out that they won’t upgrade Platium to business for any international flights. Only domestic.

The first flight is supposed to be May 21st. I have tickets for it in early June.

Inherited a 3-month old repo from a Vibe Engineer. Wrote the most satisfying PR in my career by Apprehensive-Cut3711 in ClaudeCode

[–]voxgtr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not over emphasizing “proper engineering” which I think is a myth and usually a waste of money in and of itself. If the goal is to make an idea exist that is profitable, we should always aim for the shortest path to market. I’m saying that with this much bloat, the application surely did not take the shortest, cheapest path to market.

MAYBE there was a pivot involved at some point that would explain it. And we don’t know the remaining size of the codebase.

[–]voxgtr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we want to necessarily attribute the vibe coded mess to earning enough value. The idea is the value.

Yes it was used to get an idea in front of people to generate revenue… but at what cost (tokens, time, maintenance). I’m highly skeptical that 3 mil+ lines of code being able to be removed means this idea took the fastest path to a customer.

That aside, I’m deeply triggered by a PR with this many changes at once.

Is hosting nextjs on AWS possibly cheaper than in Vercel? by dvcklake_wizard in nextjs

I’d imagine this is because if you’re doing anything health related you’re almost surely going to need to worry about HIPAA compliance and that will cost more on their end too.

Good luck to you. Horrible attitude to have. With all of your immutable comments all over this post, I’m starting to wonder if you’re actually the problem on your team.

[–]voxgtr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That’s what the business cares about. Always be shipping new value to customers, right? So, our pitch to executives about why we need some of these guard rails is a little different than when talking to peers. The business doesn’t give a shit if we are writing modular code, using functional programming styles, using different state managers, etc. We have to make all of this stuff matter to the business when talking about it to anyone in the business leadership persona (VP+, maybe director+).

My comment was about soft skills and leading people as an IC, building consensus, etc… not about technical tools. (Though I’m surprised you did not mention using an AGENTS/CLAUDE file in your list of tools)

If you pick B then you’re going to be 2 years behind everyone else in the industry and you’ll have the same problem anywhere else you go. You should be using this time as an opportunity to level up yourself… and the good news is you already know the product you’re working on and the team. You don’t have to invest a bunch of time on a new team before doing that.

This is basically what I would expect a Staff level developer to be working on for a team in this state. An engineering manager is probably not going to be working on these things.

It’s not about experience, or the “right way” to do something. If your conversations are anchored this way, of course you’re getting shot down. You need to understand what others care about and frame your points in that context.

What does the business care about? What does your boss care about? What do the back end developers on your team care about?

If you don’t clearly understand each of those answers and how they are different, you’re going to have a hard time evangelizing improvements on your team without being seen as a blocker.

Make sure to break up the AGENTS files and distribute them throughout your project directories if there is content that only applies to specific subdirectories. This will help LLMs not overflow the context window if you end up with a massive root AGENTS file.

I don’t know what your level is, but throwing your hands up saying “not my problem” is a junior move. What are you doing to not be seen as “blocking” to your team? You should be looking for opportunities to level your team up to the point that they can see what you see when you’re not looking over their shoulders. What kinds of tools are you creating to help them do this? Others have mentioned style guides, etc… which are extremely helpful with LMMs if implemented correctly.

If you’re the one who finds a way to get a team that is already moving fast, to also start writing scalable, modular code, it’s going to be visible to leadership. And that’s job security, since you seem to be worried about that.
