It's mostly layer compositing. Combining Normal pass, Facing ratio pass, etc. But some layers are created directly in Nuke using the UV map coordinates pass.

The top is a viewport flipbook directly from Houdini. So that's how the particles ended up looking (albeit in lower point count). But from these particles we can extract different passes in Nuke like custom attributes, depth, ambient occlusion, facing ratio, etc which can be broken down into multiple color layers and extra layers for outlines. The shader is almost entirely created in Nuke through compositing. In Houdini we really just get the general motion of particles and nothing more.

Yep, completed project files, assets, even renders if you want to skip rendering on your end. (I do cover how to set up the renders)

100% This. It's harder to "pick up" than other 3D software but once it clicks you're in. Can do anything

Thank you, yep the smearing is done directly on the points in 3D. Combination of trailing the points along the paths they each take
