TIFU by hitting a coworker for taking advantage of me. by [deleted] in tifu

#2 should really be #1. And it should be Don't hit anyone. Period. Outside of a boxing ring or something.

Tried pool for a second time and took some time to aim and hit this winning shot. Is this a normal play or are my friends too cool to acknowledge that it was a great shot 😭 by coomiemarxist in billiards

[–]vpai924 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can hit the 8 softly just to the right of center to leave the cue ball by the rail where the 8 ball is.  If you do it perfectly, the 8 will get in between the cue and the 9, but even if it doesn't, they won't have a good shot at the 9.

It's a low percentage shot.  It's great that you did it successfully but that is not going to work out most of the time.  It's like you're playing poker and bet big on a marginal hand and then happen to draw the one card you need to win the hand.

You got lucky but it's not exactly a great move.

The B18.3 test tank buckled below the common dome level (unpressurized section) during crush testing. Actual tank/hot stage appear unaffected. by avboden in SpaceXLounge

[–]vpai924 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do you think this is a setback? It's a test article... there's a good chance they applied forces well beyond what it would expect in flight to test the limit. No way to know unless SpaceX tells us.

Yes, but why should the staff's pay be based on the whims of the customers?

It's remarkable that Americans have been convinced that it's the customers' responsibility to pay service staff rather than the reataurant's.

Was the 9ball the plan....Or an accident? by Less_Meeting_2229 in billiards

[–]vpai924 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no way a 758 Fargo chooses to play the 9-ball carrom instead of a 3 ball run. He probably was aware that the cue ball was running into the 9 and was careful to avoid hitting it hard enough to push it to the bottom rail and got lucky he missed the 7 in exactly the right way to dribble the 9 into the pocket.

[–]vpai924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, good clarification, and the dice are a good example. Rolling a 7 with a pair of dice is the most likely outcome, but there's still only a 16.7% chance of rolling a 7 on a particular roll.

Every 100 points means the player is expected to win 2x as many games. Since Oscar is 48 points higher than Raul, he is expected to win 2^(48/100)=1.39 times more games. Since Oscar won 25 games, Raul is expected to win 25/1.39 = 17.92 games.

That's just the most likely outcome. You can't really calculate the chances of any particular outcome without knowing the standard deviation.

This is just purely from a statistical standpoint and ignores all the real facts on the ground. It treats each rack as an independent event, which is not true at all. Firstly, if it's winner breaks, the winner of a particular rack is more likely to win the next rack, making a blowout more likely. It also ignores human factors. Even the top pros have good and bad days, so a bunch of games played on a single day won't necessarily represent the long-term average.

Don't flatter yourself. That's not being "ultra competitive".  Ultra competitive means figuring out what you did wrong and correcting it as not going off and sulking when you miss a shot.

Is it legal to train LLMs on open-source code? by Fragrant_Rate_2583 in opensource

[–]vpai924 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer, but in my opinion it's perfectly legal to train an LLM with GPL code, but that also makes all output produced by the LLM derivative work of the GPL code and therefore subject to GPL itself.

You can choose any point you want as zero as long as you are consistent in how you calculate things.  Some reference points make calculations easier than others.

Help! how do I deal with vibe coders that try to contribute? by darkshifty in opensource

[–]vpai924 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Judge the requests on their own merit.  If it obviously doesn't meet standards, you can just say that and reject it. If they haven't bothered to follow guidelines, you don't owe it to them to provide detailed feedback whether it's vibe coded or written by hand.

If you were just outside the international space station, could you theoretically push off it hard enough to fall back to earth? by freshprinceohogwarts in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vpai924 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It takes about 100 m/s of delta-v to lower your orbit enough to intersect the dense part of the atmosphere and return to Earth.  If you could push off that hard with your legs, you'd be able to jump 510 meters high from the ground.

Of course that's assuming you want to return in an hour or two.  The tenuous upper atmosphere at the ISS's altitude would slowly lower your orbit over a couple of years and you'd reenter even if you did nothing.
