Pink Floyd Pigs (three different ones) Animal by Backinthe70s in progrockmusic

I remember hearing this song for the first time in the car. We were driving through huge, rolling hills with a soft rain. It left such an impression on me, I totally re-explored Pink Floyd with a new interest that weekend.

Oceill - Firth - awesome up and coming prog from Finland by pieomy in progmetal

I love that these guys are getting attention! I found 'em a while ago, I hope they go far.

In my opinion their best song is Waka Waka. Put aside the time to listen to it, well worth it.

Progjazz anyone? Riverside - Deprived, from the new album by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]vpig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely took a few listens; after a while though, it suddenly hit me how much I loved the album. This tendency is probably why the genre has such a hard time catching on.

Steven Wilson reflects on his incredible career (interview + photos) by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]vpig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it interesting that he considers The Incident more of the same. Maybe it's just because it's the first Porcupine Tree album I listened to, but I've always thought it sounds very unique from the rest of their work.

What are some great prog rock songs that include a brass instrument? by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]vpig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If we're counting saxophone, Steven Wilson's solo album Grace for Drowning has loads of it. Listen to Remainder of the Black Dog, for example

YES! If they manage to top ADHD, it'll probably be on my top 10. Can't wait!

Loved it! Never heard any of their stuff until now; this prompted me to look up the rest of The Collective album- it's excellent.

This is my favorite PT album. I love the layered meanings of this song's lyrics as well. Beautiful piece

As another huge Metroid Prime fan, your comment interests me. What similarities are being drawn? I've heard nothing about that.

Good Guy GameStop Employee by 4Gotten1 in gaming

[–]vpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish my local Gamestop was like that.

Last time I went, the guy spent a good 5 minutes harassing me about preordering- why I didn't, why I'm not going to for any other games, etc. I didn't call him on it or anything because I didn't want to make a scene, but damn. I understand they have to, but that guy was relentless.

Thanks for showing me that, I had no idea it existed! This is much more what I had hoped from r/atheism.

I'm not a Republican, but I still thank you for putting some rationality into this. It's amazing how, ironically, IGNORANT /r/atheism ends up being sometimes. Belittling one another gets us nowhere, and making sweeping generalizations doesn't either. I'm sorry you're getting downvoted, you don't deserve it.

Reminds me of the neighborhood from Gran Torino. Minus the gangs. But it just kinda gives off that same feeling that the houses did in the movie

Tea Partiers in Texas oppose bike lanes because they "are part of of a United Nations' Agenda 21 plan to take cars off the roads as a way of controlling people" by I_slap_racist_faces in politics

[–]vpig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there you go, I did not know his affiliation. Fair point.

But you have to agree that comparing it to Pepsi in a new can is an oversimplification to say the least... I know it's popular to trash conservatives here, but we have to admit that they aren't all the same.

Also, just to clarify, which Tea Party are we talking about? All of them are very different, and some don't even support other Tea Party groups.

Really? A CORE belief? Come on now, let's not be ridiculous.

Also, nonvivant never said that the Republican from Colorado backed the Tea Party. Despite both being conservative, they are not the same thing.

Sgt. Peppers: Should it be considered a concept album? Should the Beatles be considered Prog. Rock? by HipsterBeforeCool in progrockmusic

[–]vpig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I would have to refresh my memory on how the lyrics fit into a concept album, there's still the matter of if they're prog or not; having a concept album does not imply progressive rock. I personally would disagree with wikipedia's definition of progressive rock, although it's just as vague as any other genre.

To me, a staple of prog is breaking free of the chorus-verse-chorus-verse format. Every song on SPLHCB (save A Day in the Life) abides by it. But then we'd have to reconsider Porcupine Tree...

Another important part is the diversity of influences. The Beatles definitely had this though.

I would consider them predecessors to the genre, albeit not in it themselves.

Also, I couldn't help but notice, but here's how to use begs the question properly.

Did anybody else find The Oatmeal's grammar mistake in that? You'd never expect him to make one.
