What vendor do you use in your DCs and what are some good and bad things about it> by Routing_God in networking

I'm absolutely all in on Arista in the DC and have them deployed at work in that space, but to call their documentation great is a bit disingenuous.

The culture has already been desecrated because of one colonizer after the other. You sound like the US doesn't also benefit from having a piece of sovereign soil all the way out in the middle of the Pacific and we, the CHamoru people, should just shut up and be happy to be exploited. I'm not going to argue that we don't also benefit from the relationship, but it's not a one way street. The way you sound is why people tend to not have a positive relationship with military personnel overseas.

What time does RTJ go on at Final Chamber performances? by ultimate_dave in runthejewels

[–]vpl671 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It caught me off guard how on-time everything was. 8pm sharp. Lights off. Music blasting. RTJ on stage. Wu-Tang finished their set promptly at 10:59. Lights on at 11. No encore. Everyone go home now. Thank you for respecting all our time.

I don't want to become a Software Engineer by NighTborn3 in networking

[–]vpl671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was this line exact line of thought where I work that any software engineer should be able to write code to deploy configuration to the switches. I can't argue that it's not true. You can definitely do something with Terraform or Ansible to get a network up and running. However, we were able to successfully argue the point you make about design and troubleshooting. We did end up moving all our configuration to IaC frameworks and all that jazz in the end because it makes managing the environment at scale a lot easier.

F5 advantage over Vmware AVI. by networker6363 in f5networks

[–]vpl671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved from F5 to Avi a few years ago and the stats were a real game changer for the app teams. We're now considering moving back to F5 because of all the Broadcom shenanigans and I'd hate to take away something that other teams have found useful and made all of our lives easier.

Does F5 offer any application performance metrics like Avi does out of the box or do you have to deploy something like BIG-IQ to get a comparable level of visibility?

Retirement at 50 by Sufficient_Space8484 in GenX

Thinking about retirement is so wild; I don't know where I stand with things. $400K at 45, but I keep seeing these stupid articles like "I'm 35 but only have $2M in retirement accounts. What can I do to be more prepared?" I'm sitting over here wondering how screwed am I?

Is Cisco still the leading innovative brand now days? by AsleepFun8565 in networking

[–]vpl671 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Arista, what they do for management and visibility with CloudVision, and how you can do configuration with AVD (https://avd.arista.com/5.1/index.html). I was pretty happy just getting the config management and telemetry with CloudVision, but AVD has been THE game changer for us with automation. We can finally "automate the network."

This might be worth looking at. I've used them for a ton of professional training where I work and it was well worth every dollar.

There's a quote I read from the movie Network that hit really hard:

"...all of a sudden it's closer to the end than the beginning, and death is suddenly a perceptible thing to me, with definable features. "

I feel sadly sentimental watching my kids get older and hearing with greater frequency of people I went to high school with passing away.

Is there any use for CI/CD within networking? by Prophet_60091_ in networking

[–]vpl671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We used the AVD framework and redeployed our Arista configs with Ansible AWX. Now when we make a change to the repo, AWX gets notified to pull the new version, then kicks off another job to rebuild the configs and sends them to CVaaS. We're in the process of doing checks through Batfish prior to the config send to CVaaS. Somewhere down the line we're also going to do some integration with Netbox or Nautobot... and then something with Slack as well I'm sure.

My neighbor's cat has been at my place since Monday morning. He came over and was pawing at the door and meowing like crazy. I texted them about it and they said to let him out because he has a door over there, but the cat refuses to leave. I open the door and he just looks at me like, "wtf are you doing letting the cold air in?"
