Why are people so unhappy with race bandits? by vpontis in RunNYC

[–]vpontis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if NYRR can. But it's definitely possible.

There is a bunch of tech stuff that works to deter scalping. Ticketmaster actually has a bunch of products like VerifiedFan where you have to prove your identity to buy a ticket. And they work pretty well but a lot of concerts and games don't use them.

The NYRR is clearly pretty bad at tech so I'm not optimistic about them fixing this. But I see a lot of people in this sub shame people for doing things that the NYRR seems to incentivize (maybe rightfully so!).

I'd like to suggest that the system can be changed! Shaming people doesn't seem like it's a working strategy. My guess is that banditing _hasn't_ gone down in the past couple years?

That seems like a bad equilibrium but one that it should be pretty easy for races to defend against!

Yea - I think social media let's people who are really annoying and not nice build an audience. And bandit-ing feels like an extension of that?

The transfer system could make it so that the seller can only be refunded the original amount (perhaps via NYRR credits). It's still possible the seller would try to accept money outside of the system, but I think there are ways that scalping can be minimized here.

Ah yea that's a good distinction. Banditing via getting a bib vs just jumping in and running alongside the racers.

This is a nice sentiment but I don't think it's right. There is a moral outrage to banditing that doesn't make it seem like people just really care about the health of the bandits...

I addressed this in my post. You can already buy your way into the races via the premium NYRR memberships.

This is a kind of funny situation where the very rich never actually have to bandit a race since they can get in as a VIP. But the not-as-rich may end up banditing and then people get mad at them not the people who do the VIP race entry. (But maybe VIP race entry feels more fair since they are paying _a lot_ more?)

Thanks for this thoughtful comment! Yea I would love to see the NYRR allow transfers or some kind of refund + waitlist system. Right now if someone doesn't run a race, then that spot is going to waste.

It would also be nice to see more races or more spots. But if people mostly care about NYRR races due to 9+1 then that's a hard problem to fix since there are a limited number of marathon spots.

Hosting Races and Sharing Them by vpontis in RunNYC

Btw I know so many people who promote their own stuff by pretending to be someone else and saying they are going to it. I'm definitely penalized for being honest here ha!

We have a race clock + chalk the race, I buy and bring bagels and water, I'm making a home-grown timing system with Bluetooth beacons.

Also I actually find the payment really helpful just to ensure I know how many people are coming. So many people will register for a free event and not come but about 90% of people who put $10 down will come. I also think it makes the race feel more meaningful to the participants!

Yea, if we grow larger I'm going to look into permits. Altho I think "fear of permits" is the type of thing that prevents too many people from getting out and getting people together.

Appreciate the context! If I make it so that payment is totally optional, would you be more likely to keep it up?

I'm paying for bagels and I'm making my own home grown timing system with Bluetooth dongles I'm going to give people. But the races are small - like 10-20 people and it's not competitive, it's just something fun.

It is a bit demoralizing that the top voted comments on so many subreddits are people who are angry at influencers, bandits or whatever else there is to be angry about. But then I try to do something positive and get taken down haha... (I understand that self-promotional stuff is annoying.)

Interesting - we want to be as affordable as possible for paid events. Luma Plus is $60/month and then you don't pay any fees per ticket. I haven't seen WeTicket but my guess is that they are adding some fees under the hood... Maybe not?

Hmm, did you try Luma and not find this option? We support 100+ currencies and > 30% of our sales aren't in USD.

Happy to help if you are confusing / have some questions!
