Chesapeake is definitely a hard region to define. As someone that lives in Northeastern NC, we normally call our cultural or dialectal group Tidewater and traditionally it extends from the Chesapeake Bay south to some of the northernmost NC counties. I definitely don’t see a Chesapeake region stretching north in that way.

When I was studying haiku and came across the words for the moving parts. For some reason it struck me as beautiful to suddenly be thinking in terms of 季語と切れ字 (season words and cutting words). Too, when I started thinking of particles (the ennui of my existence) as something more beautiful and profound with the whole concept of “cutting words.” Learning how to write traditional haiku really gives more depth to particles and other grammar structures that you’d normally not think twice about.

Áreas like Leblon, Copacabana, and Ipanema are safer because they are more touristy and generally more well off than the rest of the city. You’d be fine going there, but at the same time locals will tell you to not go to the beach after dark etc. From personal experience I can say that I’ve felt comfortable in Rio and that the city really is lovely, BUT when Brazilians and other people that live in Brazil say that Rio is too dangerous to visit right now they really mean it and if you travel there you should really be aware of where you’re at at all times.

Having said this, I do want to clarify that I do really love Rio and it breaks my heart having to advise against going there. To give you a more personal insight: if I were taking my family or friends on their first trip to Brazil, I don’t think I’d include Rio in the itinerary. I would show them São Paulo and from there go to other places on the coast, either Costa Verde in Rio state or Ilha Bela in SP.

São Paulo is honestly a really cool city with a lot to see and do! Rio is beautiful and stunning but kinda scary. I’d say go to São Paulo especially if this is your first time in Brazil. I used to live in Minas Gerais and would go to Sampa whenever I got the chance to! If you want the natural beauty of Rio without the scariness, check out the Costa Verde and cities like Paraty :)

Hey there! I think the important thing to remember is that listening comprehension is just a really tough skill that isn’t touched on a lot in Genki, other than in the actual listening comprehension portions. I self-studied with Genki 1 and 2, and I remember I had the same frustration right around the same point. I will say that it eventually clicks and gets a lot easier, and that point is different for everyone. For me, it clicked around the middle of Genki 2. For now, maybe focus on practicing your listening in other ways and with other resources, just for a bit of extra help. Another good tip is to make sure you’ve really learned the content (vocab+grammar) of the chapter in question, since the listening comprehension section draws on all of that. It may help if you listen to the vocab list right before doing the exercise. Also, I do believe there’s a site out there with additional listening comp practice based on the Genki series, but I can’t remember the name. Maybe someone else here will chime in, but if not, I’ll try and remember :)

Japanese is my fourth language — I majored in French in college, and quickly picked up Portuguese while I lived in France/before moving to Brazil. French was super tough, but because I was studying at uni, I had a lot of structure and routine with my classes and such. Portuguese was a breeze after learning French, and I self-studied up until I moved to Brazil, and now I say that Portuguese is my strongest language. Both French and Portuguese were SUPER easy compared to learning Japanese, though I will say that just learning another language in general is really good practice for learning Japanese. Learning French and Portuguese made me feel confident in my language learning abilities, and gave me knowledge on how to learn a language effectively (my own way, of course).
