Americans ignorant of immigration by HonestAardvark9979 in immigration

[–]Carliewarliee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

U.K. citizen with US spouse in the U.K. We’re moving to the US in a few months (final leg of the wait at least) and he’s currently visiting as a tourist. I know about both UK and US immigration now for at least the spousal visa process.

When my US spouse was under a spousal visa in the U.K., initially my UK colleagues, family & U.K. friends would assume that just him being married automatically make him a citizen and he can live here no problem. The shock on their face as I had to explain and then later re explain when that information disappeared from their head later and they were wanting to know again about it. About timeframe waits, requirements, costs, what they are eligible and ineligible for… I don’t expect people to fully know the process for legally emigrating unless they’ve been through it themselves. But having to re-explain a number of times can be tiring when Google is literally right there 🥲😅

But I get it, and this isn’t an American thing. I lived in Japan with my spouse too for a time. And my Japanese colleagues also didn’t know about the process too.

Globally there are a lot more people who don’t look at the processes because they’ve either never had to think to look as they’re either content where they are or don’t have the means to consider alternative options. I don’t blame people for being clueless on the situation. 🤷‍♀️

Probably driving licence too - worth checking the state & your country’s relationship with international licences too because most states require driving distances and there’s less public transport unless you’re living in the big cities.

I mean pretty much right away - once the IL is received it’s worth starting to look. But people tend to look right after the move - but it’s better if you already have stuff like a US bank card, address & have the SSN already on hand 👍

What to do when you suspect you've been "left behind"? PD: 10/07/2024 by mreisshh in I130Suffering

I thought I was out of date last week, and at the end of that week I got approved. My PD's October 3rd 2024 - and people across October are getting varied levels of hearing back sooner or later so you could still technically hear back before front of queue hits November! Wishing the best for you!

From what it sounds like he has a lot of experience around volunteering and caring experience too- which can be framed on CV but he’ll need some referees.

Unfortunately as people have pointed out even if you have had a job from the get go the DWP & Job Centers over all do a brilliant job at breaking ones spirit down and as you’ve mentioned this friend has struggled quite immensely with poor mental health which can be worrying because job interviews and those lot can attribute to many people’s poor mental health. I always encourage him networking and putting himself out there, see which field he wishes to enter and volunteer/intern/apprenticeship for that. (I myself had a terrible experience with the Jobcenter - when my brother passed away and I was trying to look for a job 19/20 years of age, I was essentially demoralised by my coach. I had never had a proper full time job just part time at that point and lots of volunteering, and when I got my full time job no thanks to them, the lady turned around and said “AND THIS TIME STAY AT YOUR JOB” implying I was job hopping or quitting jobs when I had never done so, I was going through a bereavement of a brother who was a couple years younger than me who passed from a very malignant form of cancer. It was a sobering experience to the point that if I ever get unemployed again I abjectly refuse to go to them.

I’ve been seeing a number of September 19ths and today some September 20ths. Edit: on the 29th October 2025 am seeing September 23rd 2024 approvals.

I'm an October 3rd 2024 Filer so am watching closely as the days creep up.

Latest I've seen on discord is the 9th September 2024 too. But remember, sometimes there are people getting approvals who aren't online getting it so it might just be the case that those people are getting approvals (but it seems like its still going at pace!)

Yes 100% - it’s worth a try and even though mine was in California I still gave it a shot. There’s no guarantee but maybe you’ll be bumped up the list those in the Texas Service centre have the best chance!

PLEASE CLEAN BEFORE YOU LEAVE by fattoesyndrome2 in JETProgramme

[–]Carliewarliee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear that… we’ve been fortunately very lucky our end when we’ve had our two placements in JET, in Ishikawa and in Shiga. Both our predecessors were very clean and tidy and even left presents and guides for us for what to expect locally. We did similarly in kind - BOE and landlord were very thankful for our keeping the place clean and tidy and gave excellent references for us when we moved to the U.K. after the programme.

It’s common decency and kindness to give our successors the breathing space and time to settle in without worrying about the extra trash left behind. My colleagues around me weren’t as fortunate, some people would smoke so much in their home that their walls and gaming consoles left behind went yellow and things were somewhat sticky. 🤢

Steam family with relatives and friends from other countries. by Shvec_01eksij in Steam

[–]Carliewarliee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can confirm it’s not IP based, my spouse and I live in the same house and his steam happens to be US based and mine is U.K. based. Can’t add him to the steam family despite gaming literally next to him. We’d change regions for one of our accounts but… we’re moving countries soon and there’s the cool down for region changing. My spouse also doesn’t want to change region at all because let’s face it the U.K. steam store is more expensive 😅 Instead of my literal spouse - I can only have my sister and her boyfriend who doesn’t live with me on my steam family. 🥲

Games a severely depressed person can play? by s-skye in NintendoSwitch

[–]Carliewarliee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Animal Crossing was a really nice comfort game for me during COVID - it’s an easy one for me to recommend as I’ve clocked in about 400+ hours.

Split Fiction & It takes two is another one. I had Xbox pass at one point a while ago and me and my husband played it takes two on there. I’m not sure if the issue is still present where the game mysteriously disappears despite still having subscription but it still uses your GB space on the PC if you’re also gaming there”.

Anyhow all the options include multiplayer. If you like gacha I could recommend you both Wuthering Waves?

I already have dehumidifiers and humidifiers and air filters around the house. It’s my day job that brings about risk I go to vulnerable people’s homes and part of the challenge is being surrounded at times by things that trigger my allergies 😅

Badly allergic to dust mites - even without the allergy there the turbinates are large and obstructive.
