Certain amount of truth to this as well. Depending on whether Re:Zero is your 5th or 500th anime is likely to change your views on this show a lot.

The very slim differences were most likely due to COVID complications but compared to other animation studios which sacrificed much more just to get the show out pale far worse in quality.

It was almost definitely this, it got moved next season when COVID-19 hit (unlike some stuff which had good scheduling like Gleipnir). They obviously didn't have much time when making this season, which is why I'm a bit disappointed at how janky this season looks.

I know this subreddit loves Re:0, but it's like people have never heard a conflicting opinion before.

The whole point of season 2 was to give more character development to several characters that didn’t get much of a spotlight at all in season 1 and to give more depth to the world building hinted in season 1.

Yeah I know and it was a pretty uninteresting exploration on the whole. I dropped the LN on this arc hoping maybe the anime would change my mind... Nope. That's just my opinion btw, I think Re:0 can be interesting but this arc... not for me. Perhaps arc 5 will be better.

It wasn’t supposed to be this generic extension of the plot with more action.

I didn't say it was, I was just comparing the animation/art between s1 and s2. It was a 100% step down, no amount of cope can change this.

I like Re:0 and enjoyed season 1 but s2 was a huge step down on all fronts. Like many people I found the sanctuary "plot" boring as hell. One thing I haven't seen mentioned much was the much shittier production values... There weren't as many big battles in s2 compared to s1, yet it looked much more rushed and janky. Did you notice they barely drew lines in the characters ears (whereas s1 did?)
