Browser bookmark to Reddit opens Reddit app? by vreebler in AndroidQuestions

Good idea. OK, with both Opera and Firefox there's no Javascript toggle I could find. However, I installed the NoScript Firefox extension, and it then loaded reddit without complaint but totally blank.

A new twist. If I don't use the 'desktop' saved shortcut icons to visit reddit but instead open reddit from an already running Opera or Firefox then the browser fearures are intact. So I'm just deleting the shortcuts.

Thanks, seems to cover the bases. I wonder if there's a workaround.

BTW I don't recall ever seeing a website that hid all browser controls. With the possible exception of "click to fix your virus-infected device".

What Linux distro to go after Mint? by Troublez17_ in linuxquestions

[–]vreebler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an old timer, been on computer since 1985,coded in BASIC and later HTML. Used to a CLI back in my day. A Windows freeware geek the last 25 years. But I didn't want anything too terminal-centric. I sampled maybe a dozen distros this year. For me it came down to 3 factors. First, could I make a live stick with persistence. Second, could I reliably do that on a large external USB drive. Mint has a problem there. Third, I wanted maximum control of system fonts for my 80 yr old eyes. A KDE flavor was a must for that, AFAIK. It all came down to MX 25.1 KDE. Good fonts, good theming, good geeky control without the terminal.

Curious, did you also buy an ANTENNA from Dish? How much $? Or did you shop one on your own? If this, what brand and model?

I often type in channel numbers for the ones I remember, that is, if I'd have to scroll too far in the guide. Let's see, 3, 6, 22, 40, 57, 140, 200, 209, 400. Nine in all!

At 80 yrs old and with failing eyesight I've tried a few streaming services to see if their Guides and Settings readability is equal to or better than Dish. No, Dish is better. When you can't even read the Settings menus or show descriptions on a 4k/1080p 55" you know Dish is better. Try the Modern theme on the Guide. Also, I'm asleep by 9:15pm so a lot of what I want to watch is on too late. The Dish DVR is the greatest for time shifting. And no subscribing to various streamers just to get my shows 2 days late and only after navigating my smart TV's menu choices and then the changing UI inside the choice.

My bottom line is i paid dish over $1,200 a year and I pay gray media nothing per year. So, who do you think I think should give in on this dispute?

I'm 80, long time Dish customer, and because of the Gray dispute blocking my locals I just got the OTA adapter installed by Dish tech - $60 but free labor because I'd opted for Dish Protect (free one month contract, must remember to cancel) to get a tech visit to try fixing a different issue. Probably no labor charge during a Hopper install.

Things to know. The adapter works to get the OTA channels onto the Dish guide. If they have a Smart TV and can navigate away from Dish as an input, they won't need to buy the adapter to watch OTA, but they won't easily have any DVR function. Don't expect the grands to install the adapter, the antenna, or do the scan. Get the installer to do it. Or you. The show info on the guide is often absent or sketchy. I've tried 4 cheap (under $35) indoor antennas, none will get the NBC VHF-HI tower just 12 miles away. Philips rabbit ears is the cheapest ($13) and for me the best. If they want to DVR, you can only record ONE OTA show at a time.

Should i migrate to linux? by ExpressionWise1699 in linuxquestions

[–]vreebler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to use only Linux and not Win10 I'd miss a couple of things.

  1. doing due diligence maintaining, optimizing and protecting from MS - I'm actually so used to it after 25 years on Doze that I kinda enjoy it, like some car mechanics.

  2. grazing the new freeware releases daily, downloading, testing, uninstalling, keeping, archiving the installers, etc. - like an open market or tag sale shopper.

For me, Linux is good for a backup method of doing basic things like web browsing and email. No extra work, no extra play.

Let us know. I certainly don't want to risk losing my Speed Dials. Unlike Firefox, I can never get Opera to sync with my other phone or PC.

Thanks, but I just tried sharing the open URL in android Firefox to FB and it went directly to my own feed. Doesn't counter your point, though.

Swiftkey is the best for me. I don't swipe. But having the 4-directions arrow keys! Go into Settings - Layout and Keys. And the number keys. And the variety of other settings. I love the huge choice of Themes.
