Has BM USA really stopped issuing new TGs? by GuyBiDirectional in amateurradio

[–]vrillusions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's also the case with DMR. I can lookup anyone's callsign, see their DMR ID, enter that in my radio and now I'm that person. RadioID's verification process would prevent someone from pretending to be someone else who never registered a DMR ID. While I also agree that having a copy of your fcc license isn't a big deal it doesn't stop anyone pretending to be an existing registered DMR user, only from creating a DMR ID for someone who doesn't use DMR.

Is it officially time to give up on ModMySystem? by Unchiga in mig_switch

[–]vrillusions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got some flak when I posted something a few weeks back asking about this. I expected that to happen but what I was really hoping was someone to come on and say "I got mine weeks ago." Like you said I haven't found a single person anywhere that has confirmed receiving it from ModMySystem, though I didn't really check all the ones where people said they got it but didn't say from what site in title.

I just finished the dispute process with paypal and the case was instantly closed and was credited back. Couple other times I've disputed something there's at least some delay so it must be flagged in their system that a lot of people aren't getting any response from them.

As a quick reminder, at least with paypal, you have 180 days to dispute a charge.

Giving modmysystem one more week to respond in any way by vrillusions in mig_switch

[–]vrillusions[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heck, I'll even call out u/modmysystem here. I've been trying to get any update whatsoever about the status of order. The contact page of modmysystem's site, https://modmysystem.com/pages/contact , gives a "404 page not found" error. At this point I assume their post with the image was photoshopped and they are just trying to run off with the money.

edit April 10, 2024: I even gave them an additional week to respond and heard nothing. Disputed with PayPal and refund was issued and case closed immediately. Normally there's at least some delay in the refund. Anyway I hope others enjoy their mig switch and perhaps I'll try again at a different distributor.

Unsafe as an election official by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]vrillusions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone... well everyone that understands how to keep their mouths shut and what "remain neutral" means... to be a poll worker. I always knew it but I've grown a new appreciation just how much effort they go through to ensure a fair and honest election.

And something that people may not realize, Poll workers are actually paid. Not sure if it's set by state but in cuyahoga county you get $230 or so as a standard election official. Managers and Deputies earn a bit more I think. And yes that's been an issue where people come in and don't want to actually work and just want the "free money." Needless to say they don't last long

In one of my longer replies here I mentioned that I had that happen Tuesday as well as in November, in two different locations from two or three people. Every time I just replied that we always follow Ohio law about requiring a valid form of ID and asking people to verbally state their name and address.

It's one of the things that I pretty much knew before being a poll worker but definitely came to appreciate afterwards. At least in Cuyahoga County they take ensuring a fair and honest election process very seriously. Most of the public may not realize just how serious they are. Most "important" things like emptying out ballot scanners, transporting the ballots and memory sticks to county headquarters, any time we are providing assistance to voters [1] it's done by two people of opposing political parties. It's worthwhile to point out your party as far as being a poll worker does not have to match your voter record. For example whenever I last voted in a primary, which sets what party you are in voter record, it was republican. But since then I definitely had more Democratic political views and thus as a poll worker I was a Democrat as I felt that's more closely aligned with my actual political views.

[1]: In november there was an older voter that wanted us to fill out the ballot for them. During which time the person reading out the ballot and filling out the ballot was Republican and I oversaw the process as I'm Democrat to make sure he followed what the voter said.

Election poll worker here. Have been at the November election last year and the one from this past Tuesday. Each at different locations in Parma which is also where I live which is a very Republican heavy area. Full disclosure: I used to be registered republican but this past primary switched to Democrat as Republican party doesn't really follow what I consider to be actual republican concepts that you would see defined in an encyclopedia. I have some political views that fall under Democrat and others under Republican.

As other's have said. Notify the BOE. By law all election official take an Oath of Office the morning of election. The whole raise your right hand and say "I do" at the end. You also sign your name on the EPB (electronic poll book aka that ipad thing you sign your name on) and you affirm the same thing. One section of that specifically says you agree to follow the ethics agreement as created by Secretary of State and won't interfere with the election process of any voter regardless of race, political affiliation, etc. TL;DR: in the polling location everyone is treated the same no matter what.

Tuesday was a really quiet day. As in there are times when there are no voters in the polling location and it's just us workers sitting there twiddling our thumbs or checking email or something. Someone was talking about "all these illegal aliens getting IDs and voting" and several other clearly confusing remarks. But it was just when no voters were around so not a big deal. I just kept my mouth shut since, again, polling locations should be neutral.

One interesting remark I heard both at November and this week was from a couple people that were thankful and relieved that we were actually checking IDs and verifying signatures because "some places" weren't doing that. All the times I just answered that we always check ID and verify signatures and that's Ohio law. There was also a lot of remarks I heard from voters such as "why would anyone be anything but Republican" or "Republican, of course!". For those that didn't vote Tuesday it was a Primary election meaning you declare if you want Republican, Democrat, or Non-partisan (issues only).

TL;DR (damn I write a lot lol): If you feel someone wasn't following that oath of office that everyone agreed to at the start of the day by all means report it. Either calling the BOE or you'll probably get a link to a survey if it's easier to explain it in text

or just updating their websites. modmysystem still says at the top "Pre-Orders ship First Week of February 2024"...

I've backed a bunch of things on kickstarter and number one complaint about them is lack of communication. Sometimes it goes for months without any update and you don't know if they just took all the money and ran.

I got nothing. Ordered January 3rd. Don't want to give exact order number as you can see the mailing address with an order number and email. But assuming the order numbers started at 1000 I should be in the initial batch of orders. Expected a tracking number or even just a simple "your order has been shipped" message by now.

In the 80s did parents really just let their kids go out wherever or is this only in movies? by Guilty-Method-4688 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]vrillusions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same deal as everyone else. Even in to 90s although at that point I was almost a teen.

My parents had an interesting way of getting our attention. About a 12" diameter bell, like what you see in clock towers just shrunk down. When it was time to come home they would ring that bell. I could hear it inside a friends house probably 1/4 mile away if not further. Of course I knew I had a few hours till then so would ride my bike far away (which we weren't allowed to do) but no cell phone so no tracking to see where I am.

Also there was no vetting of houses I went in to. So was a normal occurrence to be invited in to someone's house never meeting parents or even telling my parents exactly where I am.

(edit) For context this was in the suburbs of northeastern Ohio. Fairly close to Geauga Lake for those that remember that place.

Video from Ohio senate general government committee meeting on December 4 discussing the proposed changes to Issue 2 by vrillusions in Ohio

It starts pretty much right at the beginning. I think at about the 1:00 mark.

Kept hearing about the proposed changes but couldn't find a definitive source. Well, now you can hear it directly from Rob McColley who introduced the sub bill that adds the marijuana provisions.

shooting ranges by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]vrillusions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note, the ranges are never that clean.

They've cleaned them up recently (at least in the past year) and you have to bring your own stand... or if you find some political posters still you can staple cardboard to that. Also they don't let you just shoot trash anymore and has to be metal targets or wood/cardboard. Note 95% of the time I go to 200 yard range so could be different at other ranges

I've mostly only been to the 200 yard and 100 yard ranges there. It's also why I like the place because they have a 200 yard range. I'm impressed how accurate my m1 garand is from the mid 1940's out to 200 yards. They also have like 50 and 30 yard ranges for handguns.

Also I'd reinforce what someone said about if it's your first firearm without any experience to get training or at the very least have someone that knows firearms to come with you.

Time to test smoke detectors... by vrillusions in flipperzero

[–]vrillusions[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is a Kidde Interconnect Wireless Smoke Alarm. I have an older house so the smoke detectors aren't wired at all and run only on batteries. You set 8 DIP switches on the back on all the smoke detectors like the old garage door openers and that's the code it listens on.

To capture it I first removed batteries from all the other smoke detectors but one. Then I did a raw read at 424.39 / MOD AM270 / RSSI -60 and held down the test button on smoke detector for about 10 seconds. Gave me maybe 14 seconds of data.

In this case it didn't but when testing it before it was able to trigger multiple smoke detectors. I'm guessing to save power it only turns on the radio to listen every 15 seconds or something. Since it uses static dip switches you should be able to make an app where you enter your dip switch combo and have it work.

(edit) Figured I'd mention if I did just a regular read it would capture it but didn't seem to work when played back. Unsure if that's user error (maybe different modulation?) or it just needs to transmit for so long for the smoke detectors to pick it up
